Dozens of stores have been closed at Westfield UTC mall in University City due to a gas line break.
The break to the one-inch line occurred sometime before 10:30 a.m. Initial reports indicate construction crews may have hit the line, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said.
Authorities, concerned the residual gas may get close to some of the stores, are working to get shoppers out of the immediate area.
While the entire mall has not been evacuated, 10News reporter Jeff Lasky learned that at least 60 stores were shut down as winds have blown fumes around the area. A nearby Wells Fargo bank branch was also closed.
San Diego Gas & Electric crews were expected to remain on scene through at least 4 p.m. to complete repairs.
