National Bike Month is coming in May 2017 and the San Diego Association of Governments announced Friday that it is offering a financial incentive to Governments and organizations to implement programs that encourage biking.
"Go by Bike" mini-grants of up to $3,000 are available to local government agencies, community based organiztions, nonprofit groups, colleges and universities, business improvement districts, main street associations, and chambers of commerce that establish programs or projects focused on getting commuters out of their cars and onto bicycles.
Officials with the SANDAG iCommute program have set aside up to $30,000 to fund the grants.
Examples of eligible activities according to the announcement include community rides, bike scavenger hunts, guided bike tours, bike commuting, maintenance and safety classes, "Bike to Business" promotions in a neighborhood business district, local "Bike to Work" or "Bike to Campus" events, campaigns or contests that promote bike riding and public events or rides that open city streets to people on bikes.
Projects that focus on bike education, building support for biking, and promoting biking as an everyday transportation solution will be given priority.
Applications will be accepted through Jan. 20, 2017. Funds will be awarded by Feb. 17, 2017. Funded activities must take place between April 1 and June 15, 2017.
The grant program supports SANDAG's ongoing efforts to encourage people to "go by bike" for everyday trips.
The San Diego region has a network of 1,340 miles of bikeways.
Complete details on eligibility, reporting requirements, evaluation and selection criteria, timelines, and application procedures are available on the Bike Month web page.
