Please join us for the US premiere book talk and signing of "Cities of Women" featuring author Kathleen B. Jones in an outdoor garden. Kathleen B. Jones, Professor Emerita, SDSU will discuss her first historical novel. Inspired by a decade of research, her new book explores the joys and pitfalls faced by medieval woman artists and a contemporary academic who becomes obsessed with medieval books. Kathy Jones was the chair of the first women’s studies program in the nation at SDSU and acting dean of the College of Arts and Letters. She lives in Stonington, CT, and this is her seventh book. "Maps & Memories” is inspired by Mingei International Museum’s Washi Transformed exhibit featuring highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations that explore the astonishing potential of Japanese handmade paper, known as washi. This concert features the San Diego Children’s Choir in works by Ilse Weber, as well as “Six Japanese Gardens” for solo percussion by Kaija Saariaho and the Hausmann Quartet performing Kojiro Umezaki’s “(Cycles) What falls must rise” for shakuhachi, string quartet and electronics. Arrive early for a complimentary pre-concert champagne reception at 6 p.m. This concert is put on by San Diego-based classical music organization Art of Elan in collaboration with the Mingei International Museum. Ving Simpson’s intent in creating art is to unfold the inherent nature of something, an idea, a rule, a notion, a person, or a thing, and uncover an artistic understanding of the essence of its existence. He uses his artistic process to edify himself, using what he considers an alternate channel of perception to circumvent the folded (Cartesian, analytic, logical, linguistic) approach to knowledge. Though difficult to describe the process in words, Ving has discovered that a number of topics have yielded to this process. The idea of “numbers” deepens, the quality of “warriors” clarifies, the enigma of “space and time” unravels, and the universe drops some of its inscrutability. Ving uses this artistic frame of mind, where form and color, material and method join with unfolded intent to infiltrate the big questions of life in this big universe of ours. The artwork is what is left over. Join us on Wednesday evenings for a restorative yoga session at the Museum of Us! All are welcome, regardless of physical ability, experience, or age. Classes are held in the Museum rotunda by yoga instructor, Lunita Velásquez. The evening classes promote relaxation and restoration by strengthening the mind-body connection with deep stretching, breathwork, and a welcoming space. All are welcome, regardless of physical ability or yoga experience. People under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one for your practice. We encourage guests to wear layers and bring blocks, blankets, and/or any additional yoga accessories they would prefer that will support their practice. The Museum will have a limited number of clean blankets, blocks, and mats available to lend out if needed. The class will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. Please plan ample time for parking within Balboa Park. Museum doors will open at 5:15 p.m. for check-in and to set up your mat. East County Multicultural Festival on November 4 set to host the event in El Cajon in person for the 6th year Welcome Newcomer Network is pleased to announce our 6th Multicultural Festival will take place Nov. 4, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at EJE ACADEMIES. The event will include multicultural food, cultural dance, a show of traditional costumes, story-telling, games and raffle drawings. For this year, we anticipate over 1,000 attendees. The Welcome Newcomer Network (WNN) is a working group which consists of over 40 agencies, school districts, social service organization, health facilities, and the County of San Diego. The WNN was formed to aid agencies in reaching out to our new families as they adapt to life in East County. The mission of the WNN is to encourage respect and understanding of diverse cultures through community education and new comer support coordination. Our festival was inaugurated in 2017 to salute and activate our newcomers to contribute to the community as fully empowered and engaged citizens. Our 2017, 2018, 2019 festivals were both joyous and uplifting events connecting people from so many different countries, cultures and languages, and in 2021 and 2022 we held a drive-thru event! The entertainment is provided by local musicians, school bands, dancers and poets. Our festival is a truly exhilarating display of the harmonious possibilities for San Diego’s fast-growing hub for our refugee and immigrant populations. It is critical that we spread some good feeling in today’s divisive climate. The group exhibition How We Gather investigates the notion and enactment of solidarity across various contemporary artists’ practices through the lens of the pandemic. The state of emergency brought on by COVID-19 both magnified existing structures of precarity and inequity, while also strengthening social bonds. In the words of writer, activist, and artist Johanna Hedva, as a society we witnessed “what happens when care insists on itself, when the care of others becomes mandatory, when it takes up space and money and labor and energy.” The failures, shocks, and losses brought on by the pandemic revealed a deficit of care in numerous realms, inspiring many artists, activists, and theorists to reevaluate how their work can generate a greater responsibility to a collective body—a stronger sense of unity, collaboration, and mutuality. From conversations on “solidarity economics” to attempts to build “solidarity infrastructures,” this exhibition takes stock of what solidarity in the arts means today.
