Gadan is a new project created by four experienced and well-known musicians in the Irish trad and European folk/rock scene. Their high-energy repertoire has a powerful live appeal and a sound comparable to new-trad acts such as Talisk, East Pointers, and WeBanjo3, but with a unique identity thanks to years of experience in several folk scenes, from Appalachian and old time to Scottish and Italian folk and traditional music. Their lineup consists of two banjos (tenor and clawhammer), fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki, and guitar, creating an “strings-only” sound with a hint of electronics, driven by a powerful rhythmic pulse. The members of the band include Joan Gatti on fiddle, Lorenzo Testa on tenor banjo and vocals, Jacopo Ventura on guitar and vocals, and Andrea Verga on 5-string banjo, mandolin, and vocals. The band ended its first United States tour in October 2022, playing in festivals and folk venues all along the East Coast. They are now back to cover the West. Gadan’s power leaves no one unmoved. Paul Combs holds a B.Mus. in composition from the Philadelphia Musical Academy and a M.M. in performance at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His eclectic career has included performing, composing for theater, film radio and television, and producing and announcing at radio stations in Philadelphia and Boston. From 1986 to 1999 he worked full-time in music education. The Smoking Gun is welcoming back football by hosting a Meat Raffle, on Sunday, September 10! Popular in Minnesota and Wisconsin, a meat raffle is just what it sounds like: a chance for patrons at their favorite local watering hole to bring home some meaty prizes – sausages, steaks, you name it. From 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., The Smoking Gun will give football fanatics and guests the chance to win hundreds of dollars' worth of individually wrapped, ready-to-cook-at-home steaks and meats. Winners will also be given the option to have their meat cooked at The Smoking Gun for an additional charge. The top prize is an A5 Japanese Wagyu– something that would cost hundreds of dollars at any steakhouse! The 46th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands will showcase the finest in musical and artistic pageantry, with approximately 30 high school marching bands from across San Diego County and Southern California scheduled to compete. Field performances by small bands will take place in the morning (9 a.m.-11:30 a.m.) at Mt. Carmel High School’s Sundevil Stadium, with field shows by larger bands set for the afternoon and evening (3 p.m.-9 p.m.). Following the morning field shows will be a free parade band competition on the Mt. Carmel High School campus (12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m.). Food, drink and merchandise concessions will be available during the field shows. Field show tickets can be purchased in advance online, or the day of the tournament at the ticket window. Field show tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for seniors, military and students; and free for kids under 3. Reserved seating is available for $25. Tickets include admission to both the morning and afternoon/evening field show performances. Attendees also can enjoy an exhibition performance by San Diego State University’s marching band during the evening field show. Parking is recommended in the neighborhoods surrounding Mt. Carmel High. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Mt. Carmel Music Foundation.
