The Photographer's Eye is proud to present Jerry Takigawa's fine art series, "False Food", a thought-provoking exhibit that addresses the toll that micro-plastics take on our natural world. Mr. Takigawa created this work after seeing colorful pieces of plastic extracted from inside albatross, who mistook the plastic bits for food and then died. Mr. Takigawa will be at Photographer's Eye, a nonprofit, for a meet-and-greet at the opening on October 14, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will be signing his books. The exhibit runs from October 14 to November 18. Gallery hours are Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment by calling 760-522-2170. Sophie's Gallery & Gift Shop, operated by St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, will host its 12th Annual Alley Cat Art Walk, a free family-friendly art event in the Historic El Cajon Downtown Arts District, on Friday, September 15, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Local art galleries, art studios, a museum, and other local small businesses invite the public to discover the arts in Downtown El Cajon while enjoying fine art, crafts, live music, and refreshments. There will be several fine art shows during the event, including The Music in Me at Sophie’s Gallery - a collection of hand-painted musical instruments, musical-inspired prints, and mosaic art; Color at Silver Creek Fine Art & Gallery; Beyond Impressionism at The East County Art Association; and a display of contemporary Native American themed art at the Wieghorst Museum. This year, Sophie’s Gallery is excited to feature artwork from artbrutkorea, a collective of South Korean artists on the autism spectrum who are participating in the group show, The Music in Me. Along with the collection of hand-painted instruments, the show also includes unique instrument prints, up-cycled CD weavings, hand-embroidered iron-on patches, kumihimo braided guitar & bag straps, and more. The Historic Downtown El Cajon hosts many events, small businesses, restaurants, galleries, museums, and murals all within walking distance, making for a memorable visit. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident artist Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too. * The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere. * We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. * Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages.
