Join The Forum Carlsbad and San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum at Discovery Days this summer. Guests can enjoy five rotating, hands-on, mobile, innovative exhibits in the garden area, designed to engage families in exciting STEM based learning challenges. The exhibit descriptions are below: Rigamajig: This set of wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, nuts, bolts and rope allows children to learn about engineering and craftsmanship through play. Children get a chance to use their hands and problem solve to build anything they can imagine. Light Wall: Experiment with light and design using giant, colored pegs on the light wall. Literacy, shapes, patterns and more are reinforced with this hands-on exhibit. Imagination Playground: Discover the fundamentals of architecture using large foam blocks. Children’s collaboration skills will be put to the test as they work together to complete challenges. Snap Circuits: Snap Circuits is a kit with pieces that snap together to create complete circuits. Children and grownups can easily follow projects to light up a light bulb, make a fan spin, and even create noise with a speaker. This exhibit is a great way for children to learn about electricity, engineering and circuits. Wind Tunnel: This exhibit allows children to experiment with aerodynamics. They will explore how lift, drag and air pressure affect a flying object. Little ones will launch a scarf into the wind tunnel and watch as it floats to the top or gets stuck at the bottom. Ramps: Playing with ramp systems helps children explore and discover how structure affects elevation, speed, distance and motion. This collection of loose parts can be combined in many ways — making the construction possibilities endless. Coding: With colored markers, paper and Ozobots, children discover the magic of coding. Take a glimpse into the vault of stowed away art pieces by world renowned artist James Hubbell in the newest exhibition titled, “Seeking Beauty – From the Archives of James Hubbell” at the Santa Ysabel Art Gallery. Running from Saturday, Sept. 9 to Monday, Oct. 30, the exhibition seeks to educate the public about the behind-the-scenes work happening at the Ilan-Lael Foundation such as preserving James Hubbell works and spreading awareness of his vision and creativity. For the first time, James Hubbell opens his archival collection to exhibit never before seen artworks and ephemera that identify pivotal experiences in his childhood, his time at art school, and his explorations of the wider world in the years before he settled in Santa Ysabel. These experiences collectively mold a young man with ideas which he revisits throughout his career, expressing his love of nature, architecture, mythology, and the joy and pathos of being human. Opening reception: 4-8 p.m. on Sept. 9: To kick-off the new exhibition, the Ilan-Lael Foundation and the Santa Ysabel Art Gallery welcome the public to the opening reception on Saturday, September 9 where guests will get the opportunity to hear speeches from other prominent local and regional artists as well as view a selection from an extensive collection of over 17,000 items from the artist's archive, including paintings, journal entries, sketches, photos, patterns, and samples. From the organizers: Take advantage of longer days and beautiful warm weather with Summer Nights at San Diego Botanic Garden. On consecutive Thursdays in July and August, enjoy live music and special performances, nosh on a selection of treats paired with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and stroll the Garden at sunset. Summer Nights will feature performances that range from children’s group Hullabaloo to jazz guitarist Peter Sprague. The popular Wine in the Garden event will also return this year with wine tastings and presentations by Certified Sommelier Dane Kuta and SDBG Director of Gardens John Clements to discuss how climate, soil, and terrain play a role in winemaking. Tickets: Amphitheater concerts and special presentations will require a separate “special event” ticket, which varies in price and includes admission to SDBG.
