Coastal Roots Farm, a nonprofit Jewish community farm and education center in Encinitas announces their 2023 Farm Film & Music Series dates, designed to educate and entertain the community about our planet. The Farm invites families, friends, and the entire community to join them this spring, summer and into the fall for an entertaining 5-part series. The series will feature inspiring documentary films, local musicians, and meaningful conversations around equitable food systems, environmental justice, and caring for the planet. Before the films, there will be live music, mingling and a chance to speak with local organizations and individuals from the community. The film screenings will follow. All people are welcome. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic blankets, lawn chairs, food, and drinks to enjoy an evening on the Farm.

The San Diego community will have the rare opportunity to learn about a hidden and isolated Jewish minority of North Sheva in Central Ethiopia, and its struggles to retain their Jewish identity and traditions. In her movie titled “Nafkot – Yearning” (2022), Dr Malka Shabtay, an Israeli Anthropologist, takes us on a fascinating journey to North Sheva and tells a story of survival of its Jewish community, during which we will discover 15 secret synagogues, red tents, strict shabes observance, sacred ceremonies such as the Red Cow ceremony, and much more. The event will begin with an Ethiopian, kosher for Passover, buffet dinner followed by the movie screening “Nafkot – Yearning” (2022) and discussion led by Dr Shabtay and Tazebku Worku. Come celebrate Purim in Yiddishland! Special musical guests, Yale Strom and Elizabeth Schwartz of Hot Pstromi, will perform Purim songs. Comedian Goldie Hoffman, coming from Los Angeles, will emcee with Purim humor, trivia, and a costume contest (with prizes!). And DJ RJ (Ron Jones) will be spinning records throughout the night. Skate Rising, a program that offers service opportunities and free skate instruction for girls ages 4-18, is hosting a food drive and learn-to-skate clinic 9-11 a.m. on March 11 at the Encinitas Community Park. The six-year-old program invites participants to bring granola bars, dried fruit or nuts, and crackers to donate to low-income families served by the Community Resource Center. Professional instruction will be offered by local pro and Olympic skaters and free rental gear will be available for all. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes from Arbor Skateboards, Hydro Flask, Garden of Life and 187 Killer Pads. Register for this free event
