Music Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in works by two of Venezuela’s most notable composers. Antonio Estévez’s best-known music is the 1954 Cantata Criolla, a lively work based on the Venezuelan mythic poem about a singing contest between Florentino and the Devil. And Evencio Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua is filled with the influences of the country’s folk melodies, popular dance rhythms and even medieval carols. Plus, French composer Paul Dukas’ La Péri, a dance poem based on a Persian folk story, is filled with grandiosity, mystery and introspection—and an ebullient fanfare closing. Note: gates for the Friday and Saturday performances will open at 6pm.

San Diego New Music, in conjunction with the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, continues its 2022-23 season with a concert curated by San Diego Symphony principal oboist, Sarah Skuster. Held every Summer since 1998, the Carlsbad Village Association’s Art in the Village will return on Sunday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., bringing 115 local and regional fine artists for a unique one-day, open-air art show. All artwork is juried and patrons can meet the artists in their booths the day of the event. Oil, watercolor, mixed media, digital, photography, glasswork, woodworking, jewelry, pottery, and more will be on display and for purchase. Celebrating the dynamic art culture in Carlsbad Village and the surrounding areas, this annual event attracts 7,500 art enthusiasts each year. Starting at 9 a.m., just two blocks from Carlsbad State Beach, attendees can browse dynamic exhibits and meet the artists along State Street and Grand Avenue. Art in the Village will also feature: - Live sculpting, pottery, jewelry making, and painting demos throughout the day. - Pop-Up Art: An Interactive Encounter (formerly Family Open Studios), that provides a 400 square foot art-making pavilion for children and their families, operated by the City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office. - Live music on the Grand Avenue stage by The Ramblin’ Sweethearts and the That’s Right Band sponsored by Ting, with local musicians playing throughout the venue. - Food, Wine, and Beer Garden - this is a family-friendly location in the heart of the venue at the corner of State Street and Grand Avenue that will offer gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches by Drippin’ Kitchen, fish burritos and poke by Nico’s Fish Market, and fresh Acai Bowls by Acai Surf & Roll, along with craft beer by Pure Project and wine by Carruth Cellars. - New this year is a vibrant temporary pop-up art installation consisting of 10 curated surfboards by local and regional artists. Each Carlsbad-centric image is unique and highlights a different medium including carving, stained glass, mosaic, mixed media, airbrushing, acrylic and oil painting. It’s time to get spooky! Join The Forum Carlsbad for an afternoon of trick-or-treating, creepy characters, Halloween activities, photo booths and tunes. Arrive at The Forum in costume to trick-or-treat through participating stores and restaurants from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Each child will receive a complimentary bucket to collect candy. Plus, local band, Hullabaloo, will perform and entertain guests from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. A list of participating stores and special promotions will be available online. This event is free, no registration required.

The reception and discussion about food justice starts at 5 p.m. and the screening begins at 6 p.m. About the film: Vandana Shiva is a modern-day revolutionary, and for forty years has been fighting a heroic battle on behalf of humanity and the ecologically besieged natural systems that support us. But she is opposed by powerful multinational corporations invested in continuing their degenerative but lucrative agricultural practices. By profiling one of the greatest activists of modern times, the film looks at the epic struggle over who controls the world’s food systems, and asks the question, who will prevail?

Looking for something different for your child on Spring Break? How about a Zoo Camp at Wild Wonders? Our half-day Zoo Camps introduce kids to what it’s like to be a Zookeeper. They’ll learn about nutrition needs for animals, make some behavioral enrichment, take part in some husbandry activities, and meet and interact with some of the 100+ animal ambassadors that call Wild Wonders home. Our camps are always great fun and educational. Many kids return year after year. We are offering a camp on Wednesday, March 29, and one on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22.
