The guys from the Zzymzzy Quartet have simple ambitions. They just want to play it like it was when it was unamplified, melodic, swinging, dreamy, full of sly surprise. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing. They are Beston Barnett on guitar and vocals, Matt Gill on clarinet, Paul Homick on upright bass, and Pete Miesner on guitar and lead vocals. The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary. Thus, their tagline is “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they have played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ARTS HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians. Taking place on Saturday, August 12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Downtown Chula Vista Association will completely transform Downtown Chula Vista’s Third Avenue into a lemon-filled oasis. In addition to the many citrus-themed bites and sips, attendees will be treated to two stages of live music, photo opps, a lemon cook-off competition, arts and crafts vendors, a wine and beer garden, and a kids zone for families. This year’s Lemon Festival will be filled with both new and returning activations for the whole community to enjoy. At each hour of the event, there will be a Lemon Squeeze off competition to find out who can squeeze the most lemon juice in a minute. There will also be a Lemon Costume Contest with categories for best dressed adult, child and dog. Along with the new competitions, the return of previous activations such as the Lemon Grove photo opportunity, Tartie the Lemon Character, the Lemon Cook Off and the Lemon Themed Chalk Art will also make a reappearance this year.

The most anticipated installment of San Diego Filipino Cinema’s year-long programming, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival (SDFFF) is back on its third year this fall from October 3-8, 2023. Held during Filipino American History Month in October, SDFFF is SDFC's centerpiece event that aims to raise awareness for Filipino cinema as an important art form and a powerful tool for representation, education, and entertainment. SDFFF will bring San Diego communities together to celebrate diversity, culture, and heritage through cinema with a diverse mix of narrative features, documentaries, and short films. -- "My Partner" is a story of two high school seniors in rural West Maui who seemingly live in different worlds coming to learn that they aren’t so different after all. Pili (Kaipo Dudoit), an extroverted Hawaiian jock, and Edmar (Jayron Muñoz), an introverted Filipino gamer, are part of a rivalry between two senior-class friend groups at Lahainaluna High School. The rivalry comes to a head when Edmar’s group is caught overfishing a native species in a restored fresh water stream by Pili’s group. Things get interesting when Pili and Edmar’s social studies teacher assigns the boys, who are in different class periods, to work on their semester project together. Pili and Edmar strongly protest but are forced to work together. Slowly, Pili and Edmar learn that despite surface appearances, they and their cultures have much in common. As they spend time together working on their class project, they become closer — Pili learning about Filipino immigrants to Hawai’i and Edmar learning about Hawaiian culture and history. Things come to a head when their friends get into a big fight at school. Set in rural West Maui, My Partner showcases many of the current issues facing its people today.
