The 15th annual FREE La Jolla Art & Wine Festival (LJAWF) returns to the coastal town of La Jolla from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, and Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023. With a spectacular coastline and picturesque views, La Jolla is the perfect setting for this weekend of creative celebration. Visitors can expect prestigious art, regional and international wines, craft beer and spirits, a high-end silent auction, all-star live entertainment and music, a gourmet food court, over ten pet rescue stations, as well as interactive, family-friendly fun! The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival features more than 160 hand-selected juried artists from across the U.S. and Mexico. Artists from all backgrounds will display exquisite creations in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, jewelry design, fine glass, ceramics, woodwork, mixed media, and photography. But this weekend is not just for the art connoisseur—the LJAWF is also where wine enthusiasts, craft beer and spirit lovers unite. Festival visitors who are twenty-one and older can sample delectable wines from Valle De Guadalupe, California, Italy, and France, and taste a wide variety of internationally renowned brews and spirits by several local San Diego craft breweries and distilleries in the Wine & Beer Garden. Located in the center of the festival, it boasts more than 13,000 square feet with ample seating, shade, and room to dance! This year’s Wine & Beer Garden is a ticketed event and runs from Noon-6 p.m. with last pour at 5:30 p.m. The Geppetto’s Family Art Center is a FREE family area that features fun, hands-on crafts and interactive art, as well as science experiments, 3-D printing, and an opportunity to contribute to a public space art project. All profits raised benefit underfunded programs such as art, music, science, physical education, technology, and on-site medical care at La Jolla’s five public schools. Since its inception, the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival has donated more than $1,000,000 to these schools for the educational benefit of more than 4,000 children. The San Diego Automotive Museum is once again teaming up with the San Diego Blood Bank for their annual blood drive. The drive will take place on Saturday, March 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the back lot of the San Diego Auto Museum known as “The Grove.” Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome, on an availability basis. Appointments can be made at this link: https://www.mysdbb.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/76348. Last year, the San Diego Automotive Museum blood drive saved 36 lives, thanks to its donors. This year, they are looking to save even more, with help from the local community. Every donor will receive a free family membership to the museum to explore the ever-changing exhibits of automotive history. Barona Speedway driver, Sunny Trent, will also be doing meet-and-greets the day of the blood drive. Because of blood donors, local patients receive the lifesaving care they need and hope for a healthy life. Read stories about blood recipients in Southern California and their families and how, together, they survived health obstacles and illnesses, and overcame serious traumas with blood transfusions. All blood types are needed. San Diego Blood Bank must collect more than 350 units of blood each day to meet the needs of local patients who are battling life-threatening blood disorders and cancers, suffering from traumas such as burns or serious accidents, or even complications from childbirth. One pint of blood can save up to three lives.

Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “Foie Gras: The Divisive Delicacy,” by James Beard Award winner Andrew Coe, at 10:30 a.m. April 15, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library. We don’t agree about foie gras. The fattened liver of ducks or geese is either the “acme of gastronomy,” one of the most delicious and luxurious foods in the world, or it is the product of a cruel and inhumane feeding regime that must be halted immediately. Food historian Andrew Coe traces the dish from its roots in the ancient Middle East, to the shtetls of Eastern Europe and finally to today’s restaurant tables. In the 19th century, French cuisine and particularly pate de foie gras came to represent the pinnacle of elite dining — and also came to the attention of the burgeoning animal rights movement. Since then debate about this delicacy has ebbed and flowed around the world. Its production is now banned in many countries, while in France it remains “a protected cultural and gastronomical heritage,” In the United States, force-feeding is prohibited in some states, yet the dish continues to appear as a luxury item on many menus. The only certainty about the future is that the question of foie gras will remain unresolved. Andrew Coe is a writer and independent scholar. Andrew and his wife, Jane Ziegelman, are co-authors of “A Square Meal: A Culinary History of the Great Depression,” which won a James Beard award. His “Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States,” was a James Beard award finalist and named one of the best food books of the year by the Financial Times. His latest book is “Pirate’s Gold: A Gilded Age Saga of Family, Money and (Maybe) Murder.” He has written articles and blog posts on everything from the ancient history of foie gras to indulging I the tastiest bread in New York City.
