She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Using Makey Makey circuit boards, students will create fun circuits that incorporate everyday items like bananas, gummy bears, aluminum foil or bouncy balls. During this hands-on workshop, you will be immersed in a journey that explores the full cycle of a tomato plant from seed starting to food preservation. These key concepts may be applied to all aspects of your vegetable garden. The first part of our time together will focus on tomato plant care, propagation and harvesting. Students will transplant seedlings and mix soil recipes for take a take home container garden. After a short break, students will be exposed to scientifically proven methods for short term food storage and long-term preservation of your bounty. Students will learn: – Basic botany – Soil recipes for indoor and outdoor use – Germination techniques – Plant care basics including, pruning and harvesting techniques – Food preservation methods including, refrigeration, freezing, pickling, fermentation, water bath canning – Seasonal recipes Students will receive: – Online access to resource guides – 5 gallon container garden: choice of salsa garden or pizza garden – Heirloom seedling starter kit – Seasonal preserved tasters

Join us this Saturday, October 15 for a series of free cooking classes at Linda Vista Community Park! At Means of Smoke is a free cooking school from San Diego artist Brian Goeltzenleuchter and New York chef Tessa Liebman . Participants will learn recipes and techniques from members of the diverse communities that make up the Linda Vista neighborhood. Visiting is open to all, but class space is limited. In this 4-week class, Instructor Lydia Kardos will teach the basics of handbuilding to create functional and sculptural ceramics. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with glazes. Students will complete various projects throughout the course, learning the basics of clay materials and handbuilding — skills necessary to work independently in open studio. Our second show of the season is a comedy written by Christopher Durang and directed by Tyler Hewes and Eddy Lukovic. Vanya and Sonia reside in their old family home. They mourn their lost dreams and missed opportunities. Their fortune-telling maid often warns them of impending dangers. One weekend their movie star sister, Masha shows up unexpectedly with her sexy boy-toy Spike. Add to the mix one of Masha's avid fans, Nina who is visiting next door. The family is launched into a boisterous time of one-upmanship, exposed nerves, and a lot of broken mugs. Contains bits of adult language and situations.
