This webinar will address mid-scale composting for farms and ranches with moderate quantities of organic materials including manure, crop residue, and food scraps. Improper disposal of organic waste can lead to pest problems, create health issues for livestock, and contaminate local water sources. Adding compost to your soil conserves water, mitigates erosion, sequesters carbon, and can help your plants thrive. For Healthy Soils Program awardees, making your own compost allows for better on-site nutrient cycling and a finished product tailored to your needs. What is an Aerated Static Pile (ASP)? ASPs offer a simple and cost-effective method for composting organic materials. These contained systems force air through the compost pile, encouraging rapid decomposition without laborious turning while achieving temperatures needed for safe, weed-free compost. The system we will discuss is perfect for a small amount of livestock (for instance, one to ten horses) and small- to medium-sized farms or orchards. Come join us as we virtually visit Solana Center’s site in Encinitas and other successful examples of ASP composting throughout the San Diego region. We’ll discuss how Solana Center has integrated ASP systems into our community composting program to enable safe and efficient composting of food waste from over 100 local households into a high-quality soil amendment. This webinar will be held using Zoom, so please note that you will need to have the Zoom application installed on your device (computer, smartphone, or tablet) to attend and participate. This year's San Diego International Organ Festival will showcase the role of women in music. Performances are every Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, from June 27 through Sept. 5, 2022. All Spreckels Organ Pavilion concerts are free and open to the public. After two prelude performances, June 27 and July 4, the festival will officially kick off on Monday, Jul. 11 with organist Nicole Keller. From the organizers: This season’s “Women in Music Festival” focuses on the role women have had on both music composition and performance in our history. The Chicago Crusader calls Nicole Keller “…an aggressive player with outstanding technique and fine musical sensibilities…” Keller brings a breadth of musical experience as a concert artist. After her successful performance at the National Festival of the American Guild of Organists in 2021, she will now offer her first concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa. Back by popular demand, we will be offering a gold leaf workshop by artist Duke Windsor. On Wednesday, November 9, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., we will explore the process of gilding in gold leaf. No experience is necessary. Guests will be able to learn the history, tools, materials and techniques of applying gold leaf to artwork by using both traditional and experimental techniques. Duke Windsor will supply a project for guests to work on and take home, or you may bring an existing project that you wish to work on. Gold leaf supplies will be provided. Join us on October 28 from 7-9:30 p.m. for our next Open Studios. With Halloween on the horizon, guests are encouraged to let their freak flag fly! Ariana Warren and Chris Warren’s musical performance will also be inspired by eerie, otherworldly elements. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident artist Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too. * The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere. * We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. * Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages.
