Shelter to Soldier (STS), a San Diego nonprofit that adopts dogs from local shelters and rescue organizations and trains them to become psychiatric service dogs for post-9/11 veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury and/or Military Sexual Trauma, will hold its 4th annual “Saving Lives, One Swing at a Time” golf tournament on Friday, April 21, 2023 at the Championship Oak Glen Course of Singing Hills Golf Resort at Sycuan, located at 3007 Dehesa Road, El Cajon, CA, 92019. Presented by UNITE, the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. Golfers will enjoy a boxed sandwich lunch, complimentary beer and seltzer thanks to sponsor Mike Hess Brewing Co., and spirit tastings and Arnold Palmers courtesy of Black Market Spirits on course. More than 500,000 servicemen and women are living with invisible wounds, often including Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and 320,000 are experiencing debilitating brain trauma (ref: Wounded Warrior Project). On Monday, January 23, and Tuesday the 24, Mavericks Beach Club will be hosting its annual Puppies & Golf Farmers Insurance Open Kick-Off Block Party! In support of Puppies & Golf Charity and K9’s For Warriors, Callaway Golf and Farmers Insurance will be transforming Mavericks’ parking lot into a 6-hole putting course for guests to enjoy. Throughout the party, there will be raffles, silent auctions, drink specials, Puppies & Golf Swag, a Closest to the Pin competition, and mini golf! The event will take place from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. and will be hosted by NBC Sports celebrity Amanda Balionis, who is also the CEO and Founder of Puppies & Golf! Puppies & Golf Charity was created to protect and advocate for dogs in need of companionship by connecting them with dedicated and loving owners who may also need some support. Through these invaluable connections, both humans and pups may receive healing and emotional benefits. With a special emphasis on connecting military veterans with supportive dogs, Puppies & Golf has a wonderful partnership with the well-known K9’s For Warriors organization. The tiny-house movement is sweeping the country! Get the inside scoop on how and why people are designing houses that take up about 15 percent of the space of a traditional home. Students will learn about tiny-house architecture, social responsibility and community. Then they will design and build their own tiny houses out of clay and found materials. This is an in-person workshop.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC), a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will hold its 22nd Annual Morning Glory Brunch on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The brunch will be hosted at the organization’s main campus, located at 2119 E. Madison Ave, El Cajon, CA 92019. Morning Glory Brunch will feature a fun afternoon of tastings, live music, shopping, and opportunity drawings around SMSC’s campus and Sophie’s Organic Garden. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy bites and sips from over 20 local restaurants, wineries, and breweries. There will also be a boutique shopping experience and Arts Alive by Jasmine Creek Florist, which will feature floral arrangements paired with and inspired by SMSC student art. Guests will also experience SMSC’s signature Frog Race. The annual Frog Race will send up to 600 frogs down the Jr. Olympic-sized swimming pool, giving guests the chance to win $3,500 in cash prizes. Guests can participate in this fundraiser by purchasing plastic frogs to enter the race. Prices for race entry are $50 for a single frog, $100 for three frogs, $150 for a family of five frogs, $275 for a group of ten frogs, and $400 for an army of 15 frogs. Proceeds from this event go towards funding SMSC’s garden and aquatics program. Sophie’s Organic Garden is a two-acre garden that provides training for approximately 60 students to learn propagation methods, plant seeds, and nurture growth. The gardens feature a full citrus orchard, vegetable and flower gardens, ornamental trees, and herbs. SMSC’s Aquatics center hosts Triton’s Swim Team, where members from the ages of 8-75 compete in a variety of local swim meets. Tickets for the 22nd Annual Morning Glory Brunch are $100 per individual or $250 for a couple’s package which includes two tickets and three frogs entered in the Frog Race. One garden, not to be missed is a California native plant based Mediterranean botanical garden designed by Nan Sterman, KPBS TV host of “A Growing Passion”. Some others highlights include a native landscaped HOA park and a delightful elementary school-created habitat trail. This two-day garden tour will allow you to see gardens in San Marcos and Escondido on Saturday, April 1 and gardens in Encinitas on Sunday, April 2. Gardens will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. Sikes Adobe Farmstead will be open Saturday only. Xanadu is the rare musical with a big heart, an even bigger funny bone, and a tongue stuck firmly in its cheek. Xanadu, a splashy musical comedy on wheels, has a book by Douglas Carter Beane and music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. It is based on the 1980 film of the same name. The film’s soundtrack was a commercial hit. The musical’s score retains the hits from the film and also includes new arrangements by Eric Stern of “I’m Alive”, “Magic”, “Suddenly”, and “Dancin'”, as well as integrating two classic Electric Light Orchestra songs, “Strange Magic” and “Evil Woman”, plus Farrar’s hit “Have You Never Been Mellow”.
