Everyone in the community is invited to Light Up a Life, a special candle-lighting ceremony to celebrate the people whose lives have warmed their hearts and whose memories illuminate their lives. The Elizabeth Hospice will host this family-friendly event on Sunday, November 13, 2022, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the California Center for the Arts at 340 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Light Up a Life blends inspirational messages, music, and a memorial ceremony to lift the hearts of those touched by loss, illness or sorrow. Admission and parking are free. Registration is required by November 4, here! All attendees will have the opportunity to light a candle during the memorial ceremony. In support of The Elizabeth Hospice’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested. Individuals can receive a 2022 keepsake ornament with a $100 donation or a personalized ornament with a donation of $250 or more. Opening reception: We are pleased to invite you to the opening reception of the exhibition The Smallest Show on Earth: Paper Theaters Explored on Friday, Sept. 23 from 6-8 p.m. On view September 23, 2022 - January 22, 2023 About the exhibition: This exhibition celebrates the long history and recent creative innovations in this unique art form. Paper theatres, also known as toy theatres, originated to promote productions in Victorian Era London. They were printed on paperboard sheets and sold as kits at the concession stand of an opera house, playhouse, or vaudeville theater. These paper theatre hobbyists ended up learning a great deal about scenic design, lighting effects, sound effects, musical underscoring, acting, directing — all through a paper theatre toy. The theaters gradually declined in popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries but have enjoyed a resurgence in interest in recent years among many puppeteers, filmmakers, theater historians, and hobbyists. This exhibition will introduce new audiences to this playful and engaging craft and offer the opportunity for a wide range of theatrically themed, complimentary programs. Curated by Scott Paulson. Quartet Luminoso is a virtuoso chamber music ensemble comprised of clarinetist Robert Zelickman, violinist Paivikki Nykter, violist Francesca Savage and cellist Cecilia Kim. Their performances of duos, trios and quartets have delighted audiences since 2015. Featured in the performance will be Tremble Clefs Artistic Director, Matt Ignacio, as guest vocalist. Quartet Luminoso is back! Please come join us for an afternoon of beautiful music featuring the Quartet Luminoso. This is a benefit concert and fundraiser for Tremble Clefs, a non-profit therapeutic singing program which is free for people living with Parkinson’s and their care partners. The Hillcrest Wind Ensemble presents "A Joyous Celebration," an evening of festive holiday music, on Saturday, December 17 at Linder Hall, at the First United Methodist Church, 2111 Camino del Rio South, in Mission Valley. We’re dependent on our cars because of freeways and the decisions made around building them. Now imagine a future where we don’t need to drive our cars every day. What would it take to decommission a freeway in San Diego? That is the premise explored in a new podcast by KPBS called “Freeway Exit.” The first two episodes of the six-part series are available May 9, followed by a new episode dropping each week through June 6.

Bach’s vivid musical account of Christ's passion, which combines a striking drama and devotion forming a pinnacle of the vocal works composed for the Leipzig churches. Bach's St. Matthew Passion was written for the Good Friday Vespers service of 1727 at the St Thomas' Church Leipzig and brings together relevant themes of betrayal, judgment, death, and love as expressed through St. Matthew's Gospel and Bach's librettist Picander. Soloists include Aaron Sheehan, Evangelist; Clara Rottsolk, Soprano; Estelí Gomez, Soprano; Virginia Warnken, Mezzo-Soprano; Jay Carter, Countertenor; Paul Max Tipton (Christus), Bass-Baritone; Enrico Lagasca (Pilatus), Bass-Baritone. Celebrating 50 years of Oktoberfest in El Cajon, this is a family-friendly festival that began in 1972, promoting traditional German culture, including entertainment provided by our popular band Guggenbach-Buam, who join us from Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) is hosting its 13th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival from February 2 to 9. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will feature critically acclaimed films on topics including child care and education, environmental protection, gender equity, trans and Indigenous rights, women’s rights and more. On February 9, MOPA and Human Rights Watch will feature a special Q&A with the filmmakers behind "Uýra" (2022) About the film: Uýra, a transgender Indigenous artist, travels through the Amazon on a journey of self-discovery using performance art to teach Indigenous youth that they are the guardians of ancestral messages of the Amazon Forest. In a country that kills an incredibly high number of transgender, Indigenous and environmentalist youth of any country , Uýra leads a rising movement while fostering unity and providing inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ and environmental movements in the heart of the Amazon Forest. This event will feature director Juliana Curi, producer Martina Sönksen and special guests. ADMISSION The Human Rights Watch Film Festival team does not want the cost of watching these films to be a barrier for participation. If the price of a ticket to any film screening would prevent you from participating, please email filmticket@hrw.org, and they will send you a free ticket code. Human Rights Watch has set aside a set number of tickets per film on a first-come, first-served basis.
