Help us give a great big welcome to the students from the San Diego's Youth Symphony's Ovation-level program. This group of highly-experienced young musicians has earned a reputation as one of the nation's finest youth orchestras. Comprised of roughly 50 musicians (ages 14-18), students will perform under the leadership of SDYS' new Artistic Director, Sameer Patel (former Associate Conductor San Diego Symphony). Bring your entire family and all your friends to experience these wonderful performers!

The Russell Lecture is presented by UC San Diego's Department of Visual Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. We are happy to announce that next year's Russell Lecture will highlight the work of mixed-media artist Shizu Saldamando. Saldamando's work functions as celebration and homage to peers and loved ones. Her mother’s family is Japanese American, by way of Boyle Heights/Sawtelle areas of L.A., and a survivor of the Japanese American Internment camps. Her father is Chicano (Mexican American) from Nogales, AZ. Her work is primarily concerned with portraiture, craft and drawing. She experiments with a broad range of surfaces and materials from wood panels to bed sheets. Her practice also employs tattooing, video, painting and drawing on canvas, wood, paper, and cloth. The Russell Foundation was established in the will of Betty Russell, one of MCASD's founding docents and a long-time supporter of UC San Diego. She specified that funds from the foundation should help "foster the appreciation and study of the modern visual arts and creativity of young artists" through support for the Museum and the University.

Miracle Babies, a nonprofit organization whose mission is dedicated to helping perinatal mothers and their families during their time of need by providing transportation, mental health assistance and supportive services, will be hosting its next diaper distribution on Saturday, January 14, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Jack in the Box Corporate Office (9357 Spectrum Center Blvd, San Diego, CA 92123). Registered guests will be able to attend the free diaper distribution from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the drive will be open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Over 350 local families are anticipated to attend. Miracle Babies has supplied over 1 million diapers throughout the pandemic to families in need. The San Diego Sci-Fi Coalition will assist Miracle Babies’ staff and volunteers distribute thousands of diapers, baby carriers, menstrual supply products, and other PPE products. The San Diego Sci-Fi Coalition is a volunteer group that dresses up as superheroes and attends charity events. The American Medical Response (AMR) will also provide free car seat safety inspections on a limited basis. Families in need of products should register online at the Miracles Babies website to ensure availability of diaper sizes at www.miraclebabies.org. Diaper donations and volunteers are welcome and accepted at all distributions.
