"Unsung Heroes", is a short story highlighting black veterans tremendous contributions to the United States Armed Forces. Their stories and experiences often go unrecognized and undocumented. Richard Woods is an African American veteran, who experienced racism and segregation growing up in a small town in Texas. Only to be drafted into the Armed Forces to experience the same thing, on a much deeper level. Despite those challenges, Richard vowed to serve his country as a Marine and fight in the Vietnam war. Peter Okojie and his wife Teanna Woods Okojie are passionate filmmakers, documenting people of color, and the black community. This is an ongoing series of short form documentary stories centered around black veterans and other inspiring stories of Africans & African Americans. We want to serve as an outlet to highlighting their contributions, efforts and spotlighting the values they add to our society.

The Scarlet Pimpernel is a swashbuckling action/adventure musical, based on Baroness Orczy’s famous 20th-century novel about the French Revolution and the battle for Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is hosting a free Spirit of the Barrio webinar on the opioid epidemic led by their Chief of Psychiatry, Dr. Joe Sepulveda with an introduction from San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan. The Taste of Imperial Ave. will take place on Friday, August 4 from 4p.m.–9p.m. with it taking place from 19th street to 31st street along Imperial Ave. Participants of the tasting event will have the opportunity to walk from restaurant to restaurant enjoying incredible tastings. The main event will be held at the Gilliam Space (2835 Imperial Ave, San Diego, CA, 92102) starting at 6:00 p.m. This main event will consist of a beer garden and a stage with music from local artists. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Destination Healthy Skin RV is back for its sixth year, and will be in Encinitas, CA on Thursday, July 6th. The Foundation’s 38-foot RV, customized with two private exam rooms, will travel around the country from May to September. Inside the RV, local dermatologists provide free full-body skin cancer screenings, which are first come, first served from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Participants will also receive educational materials and sun protection samples. Dr. Melanie Palm, San Diego-based board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, has donated her time and services to the Foundation and will conduct the screenings. Volunteer physicians are all practicing, local dermatologists. They are available for onsite interviews, where they can discuss the Destination Healthy Skin program, skin cancer prevention and early detection. For more infromation visit: skincancer.org
