More about the Author Dr. Olson is Professor Emerita of Radiology at UCSD and a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Following a CT Fellowship at UCSD, she joined the faculty in the Department of Radiology where she worked for thirty years. She was director of Breast Imaging for twenty years and also a member of the thoracic imaging section. Some of her many awards include: Marie Curie Award of the American Association of Women Radiologists 1991; Honored Alumna Loma Linda University School of Medicine 1994; UCSD Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award 1996; Rell Sunn “Queen of Makaha” Award, Moores UCSD Cancer Center, 2007; San Diego County’s 2011 Physicians of Exceptional Excellence “Top Doctors” Award; Loma Linda University School of Medicine “Women in Courage” Award 2012; and UCSD Department of Radiology Lifetime Achievement Award 2012.

Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “From Mesopotamia to Pompeii: A Tale of 1001 Agricultural Bites” featuring Barbara Baxter, at 10:30 a.m. October 15, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library. This is a delicious look at how edible ingredients spurred the development of classic societies through food trade around the Mediterranean world. Over time, culinary traditions changed drastically in and around the shores of Persia, North Africa and Southern Europe. Join our audience to compare those changes with our modern ways. Barbara Baxter studied wine at Sorbonne University, Paris, and continued her inquiry into its heritage ever since. She created the visitor education program for Francis Ford Coppola’s Rubicon Estate, and has worked for two of Napa Valley’s most prestigious wineries: Sterling Vineyards and Opus One. Barbara is the editor of Planet Wine, and has also made wine in Napa Valley. The only independent wine historian lecturing in the US, Barbara has been a featured speaker on the custom and heritage of wine as bridge between wine, cuisine and art. Her weekly blog on www.PlanetWine.Net is a lively forum on the art of wine, and the happenings in its world. This event is free and open to the public. A tasting will follow the presentation.

This season’s “Women in Music Festival” focuses on the role women have had on both music composition and performance in our history. The next performer is talented Organist, Clara Gerdes. Gerdes will be presenting a Silent Movie Night. Clara Gerdes is quickly building an impressive career as a concert organist in the U.S. with widely successful concerts and energetic personality. This will be Gerdes’s debut concert at the Pavilion in Balboa Park. The program will include several short to mid-length fun movies and some of her virtuoso solo pieces.
