ArtWalk Carlsbad returns for its third year to the historic North County community on Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25. Attendees can explore different facets of art from local, regional and international professional artists while enjoying street food, wine and beer, live entertainment, and the surrounding breathtaking views. The two-day, free festival will take place on Armada Drive, overlooking the shimmering ocean above the beautiful Carlsbad Flower Fields. Locals and visitors will peruse the art oasis featuring a wide array of artistic mediums including painting, sculpture, glasswork, fine jewelry, photography, and more. Guests of all ages are welcome to enjoy the interactive art experiences and KidsWalk, a family-friendly interactive art area. In addition to the abundance of artwork, ArtWalk Carlsbad will feature live entertainment from local bands and musicians, a beer and wine pavilion and bites from street food vendors highlighting different cuisines. The festival will run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 25. The event is open to all ages and an abundance of free parking is located near the festival. Each of ArtWalk San Diego’s three annual festivals support their non-profit partner, ArtReach San Diego, a nonprofit organization aimed at increasing equity in visual arts education in K-8 schools throughout San Diego County by delivering workshops to schools that have no other resources for art. "Viva la Vida: A Frida Kahlo Art Exhibition" features the work of fifty local artists celebrating Friday Kahlo's birthday at Corazon del Barrio (formerly La Bodega Gallery, now functioning primarily as a performance space). Curator Gallery Walk-Through for The Shape of Color, the Weight of Light. San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery hosts this exhibition of pictorial and sculptural investigations on color, light and texture, featuring recent artworks by San Diego-based artists Christian Garcia-Olivo, Kaori Fukuyama and Melissa Walter. The advent of Modernism inspired artists to explore abstraction and in the 20th century painters were motivated to pursue explorations with a variety of media in order to capture both the material and the immaterial. Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, physically vigorous in form and action, can be contrasted with the ethereal rigor of perceptual light works by the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 60s and 70s; and to the interest on phenomenology of some conceptual art. The three artists whose works are assembled together in The Weight of Color, The Shape of Light, delve into these legacies; there’s a push and pull of the picture plane, a celebration of both organic and synthetic pigments while surface and materials are manipulated in novel and unexpected ways. Please note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this workshop, students will learn the art of editing their memoir including identifying what and where to cut to streamline the plot. Students will also learn how the revising process works so that they will be able to create a product that will excel in the marketplace. Peer editing will be utilized to assist the student in completing a first rough draft of their memoir. Students will be given an overview of the publishing options available to them including special guests (top professionals in the field) that will offer the most current and compelling information about publishing/self-publishing in today’s memoir marketplace. Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self.
