Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents. We need to understand their desires, motivations, and frustrations, their histories and their futures. This workshop will focus on the development of authentic characters. Participants will examine character as both autonomous and residing within the context of the other novelistic elements, and we will examine the challenge of creating and integrating these various elements into a cohesive and credible whole. The Coronado Library was founded in 1890. The original library was built as a classical building that architect Harrison Albright designed in 1909. The building still stands at 640 Orange Avenue located in the heart of the Coronado community. This original building serves as the Spreckels Reading Room within the 40,000 square feet remodeled and expanded library building. The library includes study space at tables and carrels, lounge seating, wireless Internet access, a large public meeting room, conference room, study rooms, separate Children's Library and Teen area, public-access computers, and collections in various subjects and formats. The library also has several large exhibit spaces where we display curated art from the local Coronado and San Diego community and museum-like curated cultural exhibits. This summer, the library will host "Alice: Illustrating Wonderland," a special exhibit celebrating 160 years of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In honor of this milestone, we invite artists of all ages to reimagine the whimsy and wonder of Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale. Choose a character or scene that inspires you—from the Mad Hatter’s tea party to Alice’s encounter with the Queen of Hearts—and craft your own two-dimensional masterpiece. Winners will receive prizes, and at least 10 pieces from each age category will be featured in the exhibit alongside 160 beautifully illustrated editions of the book.
