The California Surf Museum is proud to present a unique event held at Oceanside’s Veterans Association of North County acknowledging those who helped launch what became a worldwide phenomenon – skateboarding. “At the dawn of the 1960s, when the waves were flat, surfers were skateboarding,” notes Jim Kempton, Executive Director of the California Surf Museum in making the announcement. “Skateboarding at the time was the ‘boom within the boom’ as interest in both surfing and skateboarding skyrocketed. A development in one informed and advanced the other. This event is designed to celebrate those early years by honoring individuals who helped make it happen long before surfing and skateboarding ascended to become Olympic sports.” This skateboarding bash kicks off at 3 p.m. with cocktails, a silent auction and dinner. Proceeds from the “Rolling from the 60s into the 70s” event supports the work of the California Surf Museum and the Skateboarding Hall of Fame Museum. The highlight of the gathering will be the awards presentation honoring eight individuals with the “Silver Skater Award.” This award is presented by the California Surf Museum to skateboarders who have made significant contributions to the culture, evolution and support of the skateboard community and whose life has also inspired others by their example. Theater Night: “Stupeur et tremblements” (Fear and trembling) Gripping stage performance based on Amélie Nothomb’s bestselling novel Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie Française 1999 – Éditions Albin Michel Adapted, Staged and Interpreted by Layla Metssitane Play in French with English subtitles. (75 min) About the “Stupeur et tremblements” (Fear and trembling): Winter 1990. In Brussels, Amélie Nothomb has finished her studies in medieval roman philology. She decides to travel back to Japan in order to work, a country she knows since she was born there. She gets a one year work contract for the Yumimoto company. This job, more than she hope for, will bring her many surprises, from which she will learn various lessons... The main character is, of course, Amélie Nothomb herself, who writes autobiographically. Fear and trembling is a humble, funny and intelligent point of view from a young woman confronted to a new world. The message it carries could be : Let’s observe and listen carefully, before we hastily judge the Other. The play is part of the French Literature and Arts Festival organized by the Alliance Française San Diego (AFSD). For this exciting U.S. première, Art of Elan affiliate artists bring to life selected works from "Collective Wisdom," an album that explores how music might help people during hard times. Originally recorded by the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s ACO Collective and developed in partnership with the Hush Foundation, the album includes works by Australian composers who completed residencies and workshops in adolescent health units.
