"Chrysanthemum" is a solo photography exhibition by visual artist Eugenia Brodsky at WRFAC Gallery (Walter Redondo Fine Art Collection). Shot on film, the series brings together cinematic, atmospheric photographs: portraits of the artist's children and dreamlike scenes, alongside landscapes and still lifes. The title comes from a haiku by Yosa Buson: "Before the white chrysanthemum the scissors hesitate a moment." At its center is the artist's eldest son on the threshold of adolescence, and that delicate moment when innocence begins to shift and time holds its breath. It’ll be a night celebrating the artists, makers, creatives, and small businesses that make San Diego Made what it is. Explore the Factory, watch artists create in real time, and get a peek inside the studios and creative spaces that our artists and makers call home. We’re also excited to collaborate with the City of San Diego’s Artist Incubator program for a special evening of art, performance, movement, sound, and creative activations featuring: Miki Vale — Hip-hop, theatre, sound, performance, writing, and community-based storytelling Miguel Galvan — Contemporary dance, hip-hop, street dance, and movement Joe Cantrell — Sound, media, installation, performance, and visual art Cathy Carey — Contemporary Color Expressionist painting, mixed media, and community engagement Alexandra Carter — Figurative painting, installation, and mixed media Together, these artists represent a wide range of creative practices, perspectives, and ways of experiencing art. Proceeds from the Mystery Bag Wall and bar sales will go directly toward helping our Factory tenant Darell of Amoi Candles purchase a new wheelchair. Every donation made toward Darell’s wheelchair fund will come with complimentary poke appetizers from Itsrawpoke while supplies last. Friday, October 30, from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. A Reason to Survive (ARTS) is excited to announce its upcoming Día de los Muertos and Undas Festival. This free event invites the community to honor the past and celebrate the present through culturally rooted art experiences that bring together Mexican and Filipino traditions, pay tribute to departed ancestors, and carry ARTS’ 25-year legacy forward. In collaboration with the Institute for Public Strategies, the festival will feature student art on display at the ARTS Gallery, a vendors market in the newly renovated Visual ARTS Room, patio performances, and a community altar where visitors are encouraged to bring and place photos of their departed loved ones. The event will also feature art workshops, face painting, and a special trunk-or-treat Halloween activity hosted by Domestic Car Club. Saturday, October 17, from 10:30 a.m. -1p.m. The seasons are changing, and it’s a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you’ll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at Craft Collective approximately 2-3 weeks after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class). Materials fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class. Beginners welcome.
