  • Explore ceramic handbuilding & funky glazes! Mondays, January 5, 12, 19, 26, February 9, from 6-8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6-9 p.m. Ages 15+ welcome! In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes, slips, glaze, and various experimental materials. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course with an artistic and creative approach to decorative designs. Inspired by printmaking, painting and drawing, we will explore image transfers, mark making, layering, stencils, and more! Through the use of technique and materials, students will explore the fusion of 2D art and 3D form. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. The instructor will have a wide array of custom decorative materials for use and sale. Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. All materials provided. Additional materials available via the instructor for a fee. Organized by the Alliance Française San Diego in collaboration with esteemed partners including Gallimard, Villa Albertine, and the Athenaeum, this cultural event promises inspiration and discovery. Open to all, the festival brings together Francophone authors, educators, artists, and students for a rich, immersive experience across San Diego. We are proud to welcome acclaimed author Éric Fottorino as our Literary Guest of Honor, and Ann Craig as our Honorary Patron alongside a distinguished lineup of local and international voices. Éric Fottorino is an acclaimed French journalist, novelist, and co-founder of some of France’s most innovative literary publications. A former reporter, editor-in-chief, and publisher at Le Monde, he is the author of over forty books, including sixteen novels published by Gallimard. His work has earned him numerous literary awards, including the Prix Femina and the France Télévisions Prize. Passionate about cycling, storytelling, and the power of the written word, Fottorino brings a singular voice to contemporary French literature. He is also the co-creator of Le 1, America, Zadig, and Légende—print magazines that champion in-depth journalism and creative expression. We are honored to welcome Éric Fottorino as the Guest of Honor of the San Diego French Literature and Arts Festival. Jarabe, which translates to ‘concoction,’ highlights the eclectic mix of genres ranging from Mexican Folk, Rock & Roll, and Norteño/Tex-Mex to Latin Rock, Trio Romántico, and popular Cumbia. On October 4, Aleck Karis will perform “A French Emotional Journey,” a piano concert in the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Music Room at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, which will be followed by a reception. Aleck Karis has performed recitals, chamber music, and concertos across the Americas, Europe, Japan, and China. As the pianist of the new music ensemble Speculum Musicae he has participated in over a hundred premieres and performed at major American and European festivals. His appearances with orchestra have ranged from concertos by Beethoven and Chopin to those of Stravinsky and Carter. His ten solo discs cover repertoire from Mozart to the present, most recently Debussy’s Études and Children’s Corner suite on Bridge, and Beethoven’s sonatas Opus 2, no. 1 and Opus 106 (Hammerklavier), on Roméo. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the UC San Diego music department. His newest recording is available on Romeo Records, featuring Beethoven’s sonatas Opus 2, no. 1 and Opus 106.   • Ideal for ages 6-8! In this six-week course, students will explore the fundamentals of design while working hands-on with clay. Students will learn how to transform a lump of clay into a variety of forms, culminating in a final project that showcases their skills. Ceramics offers a multi-sensory learning experience that supports different learning styles and encourages problem-solving, fine motor development, and confidence through experimentation and revision. Along the way, students will also strengthen collaboration, critical thinking, and an appreciation for creativity, culture, and community. Parents are welcome to drop off their child for class or stay in our space during the class while students create. Feel free to choose what works best for you!
