This class is for teens between the ages of 11-17. Printmaking is an artistic process based on the principle of transferring images from a matrix onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. Traditional printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography, while modern artists have expanded available techniques to include screen printing. Participants will have the opportunity to create multiple prints of different colors and participate in aspects of “social practice,” in which artworks serve to create community spaces through sharing and trading. It involves constructing a larger image with your material and then condensing it into a long cane shape. When sliced, the image is revealed in a smaller format, creating stunning visual effects. Canes can range from simple to complex, easy to challenging, and can be manipulated in countless ways. Whether you prefer geometric designs or intricate picture canes, the possibilities are endless. Chardonnay Tasting Event: Let's Celebrate National Chardonnay Day! La Mesa Blvd. Tasting Room, Thursday, May 22, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Don't think you're a Chardonnay fan? Give us a chance to change your mind. Join us for an in-depth exploration of the worlds most popular white wine. Guests will enjoy several SPW vintages, including a comparison of barrel vs. stainless steel fermented styles. We'll also try Chardonnays from other regions, along with assorted cheeses and accoutrements. "What Would You Say? (If You Had A Song To Sing)" by filmmaker Joshua Hill Highlights the importance of music to Hill’s late father, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2020. A special highlight will be Hill performing one of his original songs inspired by dementia caregiving at the events! Drawing from their latest works, “Freeset” and “Loka,” the authors will explore how speculative fiction can address timely societal issues, including identity, memory and technology. The conversation will be moderated and will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. Admission is free and open to the public with required registration. A UC San Diego alumna with degrees in psychology and visual arts, her writing explores memory, identity and the cost of utopia. S.B. Divya, MEng ’00 is a Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author whose work bridges hard science and imaginative storytelling. Her novels include “Machinehood,” “Meru” and “Loka,” which examine themes such as automation, cultural identity and artificial intelligence. A former electrical engineer with degrees in computational neuroscience and signal processing from UC San Diego, Divya’s fiction often reflects her technical background and challenges conventional genre boundaries.
