San Pasqual Winery is celebrating 15 years at their downtown La Mesa Tasting Room located on La Mesa Blvd. this December with festive wine events for the public to enjoy, including a Vintage Wine Tasting Event from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 7th. The event will feature a tasting of 10 vintage wines from 2009 and beyond. Guests will also have the opportunity to win prizes from local businesses and talk with the owners, Mike and Linda McWilliams, one-on-one. Additionally, there will be a $10 discount on bottle purchases during the event. Tickets for the event are $20 for San Pasqual Winery Wine Club members and $25 for non-members. The San Diego History Center in Balboa Park presents "Aloha Vaqueros," an exhibition that delves into the fascinating and rarely-told cultural fusion between San Diego, California and Mexico's vaqueros (cowboys), and Hawaii’s paniolos, or "Hawaiian cowboys." This exhibit uncovers the shared history of these regions, showcasing the influence of vaquero traditions on modern ranching practices and cultural celebrations in San Diego, Mexico, and Hawaii. The exhibit highlights the intertwined heritage of vaqueros and paniolos and their lasting impact on the way land and livestock are cared for, emphasizing how these traditions have helped shape these regions’ identities. 'Aloha Vaqueros' Exhibit Opening RSVP Historical Highlights: One of the exhibit's key stories centers on Joaquín Armas, a vaquero and soldier born at Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Armas gained recognition for his skills in cattle handling during the 19th century. His expertise caught the attention of King Kamehameha III of Hawaii, who, in the 1830s, invited Armas to advise him on managing the islands' expanding cattle population. This cattle population had originated from a gift given by Captain George Vancouver to King Kamehameha I in 1793. Armas recruited three additional vaqueros from San Diego to accompany him, bringing vaquero traditions to Hawaii—traditions that continue to be celebrated today. Exhibit Features: The "San Diego Aloha Vaqueros" exhibit showcases unique artifacts, historical documents, and interactive multimedia displays and will be open to the public from Oct. 17, 2024, through May 2025. The original exhibit was created by the Museo del Vaquero de las Californias (MUVACA), located in El Triunfo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, and is dedicated to preserving vaquero culture in the Californias. The Aloha Vaqueros exhibition at MUVACA was made possible by the support of Ándale La Paz, A.C., the Alumbra Innovations Foundation, and the U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana. New Art Gallery Coming Spring 2025 The Kruglak Art Gallery is closed for the fall semester as we await the opening of our brand-new gallery, which will be located within the new Media Arts Center, adjacent to the Art Department. In the meantime, the Art Department is planning fall art events. The first event will be an exciting virtual art exhibit that will be available for viewing on the Kruglak Gallery website in the fall, please watch for announcements of other art events. Through My Lens // Virtual Art Exhibit The practice of the artists in this show is diverse and runs the gamut from historic processes to experimental digital systems. “Through my Lens” features the art of Chris Ferreria, Lauren Greenwald, Aaron Pedro, and Benjamin Poarch. Ferreria works both in color and black and white. He uses both abstract and representational imagery to explore and understand the tensions between the public and private dimensions of identity formation, and perception in society. Greenwald is a visual artist working in photography and video, using a range of traditional and contemporary methods to explore landscape, perception, and the experiential. Pedro is deeply attuned to his surroundings. The ocean, in particular, is his greatest muse. Photographing the ocean at dusk, he uses long exposure techniques to emphasize the movement of waves and clouds. Through photo-compositing, blending portraiture with landscapes and seascapes, he creates photographs that evoke both emotion and conceptual art, offering a new perspective on scenic photography. Poarch uses a unique process to create his images called a tintype. A tintype is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal.
