  • Salt & Straw is teaming up with some of the country’s most celebrated chefs to churn their signature flavors into five decadent scoops. The Chef Series, available from May 29 through June 25 at local scoop shops and nationwide shipping, features ice creams from Tyler Malek, co-founder and head ice cream maker of Salt & Straw, in collaboration with some of the country’s most celebrated chefs that are love letters to the flavors and techniques that made them famous. San Diego Locations include: Little Italy, UTC, Del Mar One Paseo, One Paseo Flavors in the series include: Cheesecake with Salted Yuzu Curd - made in collaboration with Seattle based, James Beard Award winning chef Brady Ishiwata Williams (Tomo, Canlis), this flavor features salted vanilla ice cream studded with fluffy hunks of vanilla bean Japanese soufflé cheesecake, tangy yuzu curd and shards of yuzu white chocolate stracciatella.  Hong Kong Milk Tea with Toasted White Chocolate - made in collaboration with Los Angeles based chef Mei Lin (owner of Daybird and 88 Club and competitor and judge of Tournament of Champions) this flavor features rich, aromatic vanilla and black tea ice cream swirled with custardy condensed milk and finished with toasted white chocolate feuilletine cookie crumbles.  Chocolate Caramel Smoked Budino - made in collaboration with Miami based chefs Alex Meyer and Luciana Giangrandi behind the Michelin starred Boie De and Walrus Rodeo , this flavor features velvety chocolate olive oil custard flecked with smoky-sweet caramel candied hazelnuts and is swirled with an indulgent sea salt caramel drizzle.  Starling Sweet Potato Buckwheat Crumble - From Dan Barber, iconic chef of Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Upstate New York and co-founder of Row 7,  this flavor features starling sweet potato ice cream, sweet potato miso swirl, and sprouted buckwheat Florentine crumble.  Caramelized Plantain with Spicy Pecan Toffee (v) - From James Beard Award Winning Chef Gregory Gourdet (Kann in Portland, Maison Pasarelle in New York), this flavor features creamy brown sugar spiced plantain ice cream layered with pockets of caramelized plantains, habanero pecan brittle and pieces of tender almond-plantain cake.   • Storytellers of San Diego take the Moxie stage and break the fourth wall! This event is more than a Shakespearean aside to the audience. Storytellers directly engage the audience, and take their cues from the audience, wrapping all in the cast spell of Midsummer's Tales. An evening is told out with personal tales, folkloric and literary tales; something for everyone. Midsummer's tale tellers are Lissette Ryan with harp and Tyler Turner, Fred Laskowski, Tammy Burmeister, David Schmidt, Mindy Donner, and Kirk Faulkner.   • “Hushed Voices,” a solo exhibition by artist Alex Ayala, curated by Thumbprint Gallery and presented in the front main gallery space at Distinction Gallery, opens on Saturday, June 13, at 317 E. Grand Ave., Suite A, Escondido, CA 92025. The opening reception will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. as part of the monthly Second Saturday Art Walk in downtown Escondido, a community-wide celebration of local galleries, museums, and creative spaces. The evening will feature live music, with drinks available for purchase from Last Spot Bar, located inside the Distinction Gallery arts complex. The exhibition presents a new body of figurative works by Ayala, whose practice spans drawing and painting. Her work subtly and boldly distorts the human form, creating imagery that feels both emotionally familiar and visually uncanny. Since 2009, Thumbprint Gallery has built a reputation throughout Southern California for championing artwork that blends the offbeat, contemporary, and surreal. The gallery has become known for its strong curatorial voice and history of introducing emerging artists to wider audiences. For more than twenty years, Distinction Gallery has showcased contemporary work by both emerging and established artists, cultivating a worldwide reputation while remaining a cornerstone of the San Diego arts community. This family-friendly event raises critical funds for lifesaving research, early detection initiatives, programs and services to help achieve a world free of lung cancer and lung disease. The event provides an opportunity for engaging video, photos and interviews with participants affected by lung disease and lung cancer. - 5K walk through the Flower Fields’ beautiful farm paths and Pacific Ocean views - Artists gardens, bird aviaries, park benches and activities for the entire family - A Discovery Zone with hands-on, life-changing educational activities focused on protecting your lungs - A children’s playground with wagon rides and a giant inflatable set of lungs - An important opportunity to unite with families from around the region to save lives by promoting lung health and ending lung disease Who: Individuals, families and corporate teams from throughout the North County and all of San Diego who have been impacted by lung disease and lung cancer will be available for interviews onsite. Why: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in California and across the U.S. Someone is diagnosed with the disease about every two minutes. But there is hope. More people are surviving lung cancer than ever due to increased awareness and advancements in detection and treatment. The five-year survival rate has increased to nearly 30%, which is a 26% increase over the last five years. The San Diego "LUNG FORCE" Walk has raised millions since 2014 to help end lung cancer. Nationally, "LUNG FORCE" has raised more than $35 million for lifesaving lung cancer research.
