  • Sequels, reboots, franchises, and songs that remake old songs! Does it feel like everything new in popular culture is just derivative of something else or something old? Contrary to popular belief, the reason is not audiences or marketing, but Wall Street. Join UCSD Media and Popular Culture professor Andrew deWaard for a stimulating discussion of his new book "Derivative Media: How Wall Street Devours Culture" and how hedge funds, asset managers, venture capitalists, private equity firms, and derivatives traders set the tone for the movies, TV, and popular music you enjoy. Professor deWaard shows us how the financial sector is destroying culture by upwardly redistributing wealth. He offers crucial analysis not just for people who oppose corporate behavior for ethical reasons or the takeover of our mediascapes that harms creativity and culture, but also for consumers who simply want to be entertained or have a good time.
