  • Zero Waste San Diego is hosting an SD Fixit Clinic at the Valley Center Branch Library. Bring your broken, non-functioning things: electronics, appliances, computers, toys, bicycles, clothes, etc. for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. We’ll provide work-space, specialty tools, and guidance to help you disassemble and troubleshoot your item and it’s all free, though we welcome donations to keep the movement growing! Whether we fix it or not, you’ll learn more about how it was manufactured and how it worked while trusting it won’t end up in a landfill. Please Note: We do not operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registered guests receive priority, and repairs are matched to the appropriate fixer. Wait times may vary. Thank you for your patience. Interested in volunteering with SD Fix-it? Click on this link to fill out an application: https://sdfixitclinic.org/volunteer/
  • A true story of laughter, love and a little cheek. A Yorkshire women’s club decides to take an unconventional route with their coming year’s fundraising calendar – rather than their typical photos of spectacular views of local landscapes or churches, it’s going to be photos of spectacular views of their own members wearing next to nothing! Their reasoning for the risqué move is honorable but it takes much convincing and plenty of liquid courage to capture each calendar girl pose month-by-month. This play blends humor, heart, and empowerment, telling the true-inspired story of ordinary women discovering courage, friendship, and self-acceptance along the way. "Calendar Girls" contains adult themes and language. There are scenes with hidden partial nudity. This production is best suited for those over the age of 13 and is presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals. Please note: The Saturday performances on Aug. 29 and Sept. 12 are at 7:30 p.m. The Lamplighters Community Theatre on Facebook / Instagram

  • Learn to Weave! Saturday, July 25, from 1-5 p.m. Join us for an afternoon of fiber friendship and camaraderie. Weaving is an ancient craft; it shelters and clothes as well as adorns our spaces, adding texture, color, design and inspiration to our lives. And it is the actual process of weaving, along with selecting fibers, natural objects; guiding weft through the vertical foundation of warp strings; creating pattern/texture as the process unfolds…these steps continue to connect us with the past, and more importantly, with ourselves. Join in this weaving workshop as we weave intuitively and work together in a space of creativity and openness. Instructor Jeanine Ertl will provide guidance in a variety of weaving techniques and will surround you with warped looms to work on, tools to learn with, natural fibers, and foraged and gathered natural objects to incorporate into your weavings. Feel free to bring your own items to weave into your piece, especially if there are any fibers/yarns, stones/crystals, shells, leaves/grasses, etc. that you’d like to experiment with. Each weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind woven textile. We’ll have rods on hand for those who would like to adapt their pieces into wall hangings. And, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you’ll have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home. Come explore mindfully making in a space of creativity & harmony with others. This workshop is perfect for anyone wanting to unlock their creativity for an afternoon of hands-on fiber fun, creating in a grounding space while making a one-of-a-kind, take-home woven piece. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! • This concert celebrates American music in honor of the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. For generations, the United States has inspired composers from both within and beyond its borders, shaping works that reflect America’s landscapes, cultures, and evolving identity. This program highlights that influence, beginning with Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” a work shaped by his impressions of America’s musical traditions. We continue with Edward MacDowell’s Suite No. 2, “Indian Suite,” one of the earliest major orchestral works by an American composer. The evening concludes with a world premiere of an original piece written by MiraCosta College Symphony Orchestra’s composer‑in‑residence, Christoph Rayburn—to commemorate this historic anniversary. We hope you’ll join us for this special celebration of American music.
