Award-winning writer Jamaica Kincaid will be a featured guest at the 31st Annual Writer's Symposium by the Sea, "Writing Across the Divide." One of the most decorated writers of her generation, Jamaica Kincaid is a writer with a clear, illuminating vision of humanity. Written in a deceptively simple and unadorned style, Kincaid’s books are informed by her status as an uprooted subject, born in the Caribbean island of Antigua, but living in North America. Kincaid deals with such universal themes as coming-of-age and the necessity of separation from parents and establishing identity. After leaving Antigua for New York to work as an au pair, Kincaid studied photography at the New York School for Social Research and attended Franconia College in New Hampshire. A staff writer at The New Yorker from 1974-1996, she published her first book, a collection of pieces for The New Yorker called "At the Bottom of the River," in 1983. Her first novel, "Annie John," followed in 1985—the coming-of-age story of a willful ten-year-old growing up on Antigua. With thirteen translations, it is estimated it is the most translated book by an Antiguan author. Further novels include "Lucy," the story of a teenage girl from the West Indies who comes to North America to work as an au pair for a wealthy family; "The Autobiography of My Mother," a novel set on the island of Dominica and told by a 70-year-old woman looking back on her life; and "Mr. Potter" which follows the life of an illiterate taxi chauffeur. Kincaid’s deeply personal and reflective style has made her one of the most influential voices in contemporary literature. Join New Fortune at the San Diego Central Library for a one-night-only staged reading of "The Dover Panda Trial" starring John de Lancie (the iconic "Q" in Star Trek and co-owner with Leonard Nimoy of "Alien Voices") and an incredible ensemble of actors directed by New Fortune's A.D., Richard Baird. Co-written by John de Lancie (Q) and Kristen Tregar (Ph.D), "The Dover Panda Trial" is a radio-style play based on the actual transcripts and surrounding footage from the 2005 trial, Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School Board—where the school board in Dover, Pennsylvania was sued for requiring the teaching of a new “science” called “Intelligent Design” alongside Darwinian evolution in the ninth-grade science classroom. The reading will be followed by a brief panel discussion and Q&A. There will also be an "American Monkeys" book sale (the first published abridgment of the Scopes Monkey Trial transcripts) to benefit public libraries (paperbacks $20). iris yirei hu will share the work she's created as the 2025 Longenecker-Roth Artist in Residence at the Department of Visual Arts, UC San Diego. iris is a multidisciplinary journey-based artist from Los Angeles who works across paintings, installations, intercultural collaborations, writing, and public art. She roots her art practice in processes of material and spiritual transformation, as evidenced in labor intensive pieces and installations that explore the subterranean realms of grief and loss, cycles of life and death, the earthly and the otherworldly, and the infinitely evolving self. Central to her practice is working across territories and peoples, through which she investigates how geography, kinship, and the sacred are reflected in cultural technologies and ecological practices. A lifelong learner, she has undertaken rigorous study of ceramics, weaving, and papermaking by being in community with culture bearers and experts, and proposes that the preservation of craft is integral to bridging cultural, geographic, and generational divides. In 2022, LA Metro commissioned iris to design a large-scale mosaic artwork for the future UCLA/Westwood Purple Line Metro Station slated to open for the 2028 Summer Olympics. She has exhibited at the Armory Center for the Arts (Pasadena, CA); Center for Arts, Research, and Alliances (New York, NY); Museum of Contemporary Art (Tucson, AZ); Plug In Institute for Contemporary Art (Winnipeg, MB, Canada); John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI); Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery; among many other venues. Synopsis: "The Waiting Game" tells the little-known story of a renegade basketball league that inspired today’s NBA – and the mostly black players who have had to fight for decades for fair compensation and recognition. The ABA innovated pro basketball with the 3-point shot and slam dunk contest, and embraced black culture in ways that the NBA had not yet. And despite the pioneering way the players of the ABA players played basketball, when the two leagues “merged”, ABA players were forgotten in a business deal gone bad. "The Waiting Game" follows a dogged not-for-profit’s pursuit of benefits for former ABA players now struggling to survive. While the NBA generates $10+ billion a year, former ABA athletes struggle to buy life-saving medicines, avoid eviction, and worse. This documentary is about the fight to get them their due.
