Using STEAM, children get acquainted with various woodworking tools, techniques, and devices and learn about wood as a material. Students will be guided through a series of exercises that teach skills such as hand-eye coordination, problem solving, craftsmanship, and the mechanics of woodworking hand tools. Students will learn about wood as a material, proper, safe use of hand tools, and will make projects to take home. This class uses mostly hand tools. We teach safe methods for sawing, drilling, and clamping wood in this class. All materials included. We teach handtool skills to this age group using safe materials and practices. Each project builds on craftsmanship, dexterity and material exploration. Students will get acquainted with various woodworking tools and techniques and will be guided through a series of exercises that exercise hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and creativity. Students will make at least one project to take home over the course of the series. All materials included. Projects differ each month.   • Excelarace announces their inaugural Moonlight Beach Half Marathon & 5K to take place on the picturesque landscape of north coastal San Diego’s world-famous Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Sunday, March 20. The course starts and finishes atop the beautiful Moonlight Beach (parking area) with breathtaking views in beautiful Encinitas, Calif. The course offers over 8 miles of the Pacific Ocean and Batiquitos lagoon views. This scenic double loop passes the famous “Cardiff Kook” statue, rises above some of the most popular surf breaks in the world and over 8 miles of ocean views. Registration is now open – $44 for the 5K and $129 for the Half Marathon at www.MoonlightBeachHalfMarathon.org. Race registration will open at 6:00 a.m. Opening announcements will then follow at 7:00 a.m. The Half Marathon will start at 7:30 a.m. while the 5K will begin at 9:00 a.m. The course will close at 10:00 a.m. at which time the award ceremony will begin. All runners receive a high-quality t-shirt and finisher medal. There will be an After Party at 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion, just blocks from the finish line with food, drinks, and live music. Race bib and t-shirt (packet) pick-up is strongly encouraged – Friday, March 18 or Saturday, March 19 between 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. – at Road Runner Sports Carlsbad, 5617 Paseo Del Norte #100, Carlsbad (92008). This year’s sponsors are Road Runner Sports, and Herman Cook Volkswagen Encinitas. A generous portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit both the Boys Scouts of America (Encinitas Troop #776), as well as Encinitas’ Community Resource Center (CRC).
