Everything from a Pizza Project to a golf tournament to a Brews Bands and Cuts show at a local Brewery. I am hoping to get the word out to our community as for there is something for everyone to enjoy throughout this week of events. • The City of Chula Vista, in collaboration with the South Bay Sustainable Communities Network, is issuing a community-wide call for volunteers to join the 22nd Annual Beautify Chula Vista Day on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon. This much-anticipated neighborhood cleanup event aims to engage residents in hands-on beautification efforts across the city. In 2024, over 400 dedicated volunteers removed thousands of pounds of litter and graffiti, making a visible and lasting impact on Chula Vista’s neighborhoods, creeks, and canyons. Now in its 22nd year, Beautify Chula Vista Day continues this powerful tradition of civic engagement and environmental stewardship. Volunteers can choose to begin their day at either Loma Verde Community Center, located at 1420 Loma Lane, or Chula Vista City Hall, located at 276 Fourth Avenue. Upon arrival, participants will check in with event leads, complete a safety orientation, and receive cleanup supplies and instructions for the day’s efforts. All volunteers must register in advance at www.BeautifyChulaVista.org. Participants are asked to provide their own transportation and to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. They should also bring work gloves, a refillable water bottle, and any snacks or lunch they may need. This event also qualifies for student community service hours. With more than 400 volunteers needed, the event will focus on removing graffiti, collecting litter, and restoring the visual appeal of streets, parks, and public spaces. This is a prime opportunity for residents, families, students, and local organizations to come together, give back, and take pride in their community. For more information or assistance with registration, contact the City’s Environmental Services Division at environmentalservices@chulavistaca.gov or call (619) 691-5122. Together, we can keep Chula Vista clean, green, and beautiful for all. Visit: https://www.chulavistaca.gov/departments/clean/beautify-chula-vista City of Chula Vista on Instagram and Facebook
  • Free Teen Art is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. Canada Kerwin has worked as a K–Grade 2 art volunteer since 2005, creating age-appropriate lessons that include introduction to art theory and artists’ biographies and tie-in to curricula as needed. Retired from the healthcare field, Canada also served in the US Navy. She applies her background experience to her ongoing art studies at Mira Costa College, focusing on the human form through life drawing and sculpture. She says, “Capturing the infinite expressions of the body through gesture and line is a very fascinating and gratifying practice.” Athenaeum Music & Arts Library on Facebook / Instagram
  • The series opens on Wednesday, October 29, with an Athenaeum debut by the Kris Davis Trio, featuring Davis on piano, Robert Hurst on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums. Recognized in the DownBeat Critics Poll as Pianist of the Year in 2025, 2022, and 2020, Davis has become one of the most celebrated jazz pianists of her generation. A Grammy Award–winner, she has been described in The New York Times as a beacon for “deciding where to hear jazz on a given night.” She was named a Doris Duke Artist in 2021, alongside Wayne Shorter and Danilo Perez, and Pianist and Composer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, also in 2021. Her 2019 album, Diatom Rhythms, was voted jazz album of the year by both The New York Times and NPR Music’s Jazz Critics Poll. On her latest album, "Run the Gauntlet", Davis is accompanied by the extraordinarily talented bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. “Hurst, who powered bands led by both Wynton and Branford Marsalis in the ’80s, and Blake, one of the contemporary scene’s most reliably propulsive percussionists, are both expert drivers of the beat” (The New York Times). Seamlessly melding composition with improvisation, "Run the Gauntlet" stands as a testament to Davis’s singular voice within the jazz landscape. Of the album, The New York Times commented, “The trio digs heartily into Davis’s obliquely funky vamps, uniting and diverging in turn to dazzling effect.” Visit: https://www.ljathenaeum.org/events/jazz-25-1029 Kris Davis on Instagram and Facebook
