Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. –12:30 p.m. January 14–February 11 (5 weeks, 15 total hour of instruction) AAC Print Room Looking at a life organically: Pick a time frame or a theme: a day-in-the-life, the places where you have lived, a special trip, or significant events over a lifetime. We will map the event(s), then utilize words, text-as-image, and actual images to represent those events as a vine that winds its way through the pages of an accordion book. This organic approach uncovers the threads that connect these phenomena, as well as your thoughts about them. For the cover page, we will make a low-tech, ink self-portrait. Then, using folded paper, we will create non-adhesive hardcovers to house the accordion pages. The resulting structure will be an exploration of the twists and turns of self-reflection on our past stories and our potential future stories. Materials: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils and a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or PVA & brush or small roller), 12” ruler, scissors. Optional/recommended: 12” centering/beveled ruler, bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder. Materials will be provided to create the book and the covers. Learn how to draw the human figure, hone your existing skills, and develop some new ones. This class is for all levels of skill. Materials: Newsprint pad, 18” x 24”; soft vine charcoal; kneaded eraser. You are welcome to bring along any materials not on the list that you already have and would like to use. Wednesdays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. January 8–March 5 (9 weeks, 27 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio In this class we will sculpt a full figure from the life model. Students will have eight weeks to build an armature, learn basic figure proportions and structure, and sculpt an entire figure from head to toe. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the skeleton and basic anatomy, and how to depict the illusion of weight. Regular instructor demonstrations and discussions of technique will be given. Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. January 8–March 5 (9 weeks, 27 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio There are few artistic pursuits more rewarding than creating a successful portrait bust, especially of a loved one or significant other. Join sculptor Marty Davis as he teaches the process of creating a bust from photos. Students will learn how to photograph a portrait sitter, and how to use those photos to create an accurate three-dimensional (3D) likeness. Marty will explain and demonstrate the elements of successful portraiture. Topics include the anatomy of the skull and neck, the proportion and placement of the features, and how to generate and refine a convincing likeness. Students will create a single portrait bust of a subject of their choosing over eight weeks. No experience with sculpture necessary. This class is for all skill levels. 2 Tuesdays and 1 Thursday, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. January 7, 9, and 14 (3 days, 9 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio How do you like your coffee? Made with your own two hands! Let's move away from the disposable cup and make something that lasts. In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn hand-building techniques—pinch, coil, and slab—to create functional drinking vessels. We will give special attention to coffee cups to encourage students to enhance their own morning coffee rituals; however, any favorite beverage will fit. We will learn to handbuild: mugs (cups with handles) tumblers (cups without handles) espresso cups matching saucers matcha bowls pour over coffee drippers While this is a beginner-friendly course, intermediate and advanced students may join. Students will learn how to: Wedge clay Roll out slabs using a rolling pin and wooden guides Utilize hand-building techniques for form and function Use templates Compress & strengthen clay to reduce air bubbles, cracks, and warping during the drying process Make handles Trim and carve into leather hard clay Apply decoration and texture Glaze vessels and reduce mishaps Materials: Clay will be provided. Please purchase a standard-size rolling pin and beginner’s pottery tool kit. Tools can be purchased locally at Freeform Ceramics in National City. We will also learn how to improvise tools with common household items. Please bring a notebook / sketchbook to class to keep track of wonderful ideas. Tuesdays, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. February 4–25 (4 Weeks, 12 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio Experience the fun in “fun-ctional” ceramics! Learn and develop your hand-building pottery skills with three projects, such as a set of nesting plates, a berry bowl, and your own custom mug. Each class will introduce a new project to work on, which will require practicing different techniques to get to the final assembled piece. The last class will be reserved for glazing all the work produced during the class. At the class's completion, you will take home your glazed projects, finished and ready to be used. Beginning to intermediate students are welcome. Materials: The materials fee includes clay, glazes, firings, and the use of basic tools. It is recommended that students bring an apron and a hand towel for cleanup, as well as a notebook and pencil to write down instructions and sketch ideas. Tuesdays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. January 7–February 11 (6 weeks, 18 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio (Includes model) This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents. Charcoal: Soft vine charcoal; 4B charcoal pencil; kneaded eraser; smooth newsprint; drawing board; rags or paper towels.
