  • Mission Hills Heritage (MHH) is shining a spotlight on one of the neighborhood’s most iconic—and often overlooked—architectural styles with its upcoming Mid-Century Modern Weekend event, a celebration of design, community, and preservation. Home to one of the region’s largest concentrations of mid-century architecture, Mission Hills features work by celebrated architects like Frederick Liebhardt, Lloyd Ruocco, and Homer Delawie. “In 20 years, we’ve never focused exclusively on this important genre,” says MHH co-founder Barry Hager. “It’s time.” The May event is designed as a dynamic two-day experience. The weekend begins Friday, May 15 with the debut of the Modernism Mixer, an exclusive reception hosted at a private mid-century home in Mission Hills. Guests will enjoy sweeping panoramic views from SeaWorld to the University of San Diego, exclusive access to portions of the home’s interior, a curated wine bar, and a surprise VIP guest. A grazing table will be presented by Venissimo Cheese, the preeminent Mission Hills fromagerie known for its exceptional selection of gourmet cheeses from around the world. “This is exactly the kind of experience our members have been asking for,” says events chair Sharon Lieder. “It’s a stunning setting and a unique way to connect.” The celebration continues Saturday, May 16, with MHH’s Annual Spring Lecture. Guests will enjoy coffee, light refreshments, and the ever-popular vendor showcase, offering inspiration and practical insights for maintaining and enhancing historic homes. The lecture will feature Keith York, a leading author and expert on mid-century modern homes in Southern California, and Dave Hampton, a modernism craft authority and curator of major exhibits exploring San Diego’s mid-century art and architecture. Beyond celebration, the weekend supports MHH’s core mission of preservation. “With growing pressure on historic resources, this work is more important than ever,” Lieder adds. Mid-Century Modern Weekend promises an inspiring and memorable experience celebrating architecture, community, and the future of preservation.
