Join Museum educators for a special workshop inspired by the practice of sobremesa, cherished by artist Alfredo Castañeda. Sobremesa refers to the moments when a meal extends into lingering conversation, when guests talk, listen to music, and reflect on life and ideas. This workshop invites participants to gather in community, engage in both prompted and organic conversation, and take part in an art-making activity inspired by Castañeda’s work and practice. Poetry and storytelling, central to Castañeda’s sobremesas, will guide the flow of dialogue, sparking creativity and connection. Media Arts Center San Diego’s 24th Innovative Video in Education (iVIE) Awards Ceremony and Student Film Festival 2025 will take place on Sunday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students from across San Diego County will screen their films showcasing their talents and be celebrated during the awards ceremony at UCSD’s Park and Market in downtown San Diego (1100 Market St). Student filmmakers from schools all across the county, including Central San Diego, El Cajon, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Clairemont, Vista, Fallbrook, and La Mesa are among the participants. The day will begin with the awards ceremony for all grade levels 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.. Following the ceremony, screenings of all the nominated films will take place upstairs at MACSD’s Digital Gym CINEMA from noon to 4 p.m. Past student participants have stated about the annual IVIE event, “It’s like a replica of the Grammy’s. We get awards, get called up,” or “It means a lot to be able to have a space for us to share and be proud of our work.”. Founder and Executive Director, Ethan van Thillo, of MACSD states, "We are so elated that San Diego's youngest filmmakers continue to produce amazing films despite the enduring challenges of the pandemic. Open Studio at the Athenaeum Art Center invites local printmakers and artists to utilize the equipment and space in the printmaking studio. Prior knowledge in printmaking and equipment familiarity is required as open studio time is not for learning a new printmaking process or one on one lessons. The Athenaeum Art Center offers printmaking courses throughout the year for those wanting to learn a new craft or wanting to enhance their art practice. Open Studio is free for everyone. "Disrupted Pathology" Joshua Almond Aug. 27 – Oct. 10, 2025 Through his wooden sculptures, studio furniture, and drawings, Joshua Almond examines cellular processes where normal patterns break down, exploring the visual poetry found in these moments of biological disruption. These profound transformations reveal tensions between order and chaos, growth and decay. Each piece investigates how dysfunction possesses its own beauty and logic, transforming microscopic phenomena into human-scaled encounters. The inclusion of functional furniture alongside sculptural works creates a further dialogue between utility and organic inspiration. Rather than clinical illustration, the works in this exhibition provoke a re-examination of the multitude of cells collectively responsible for our own unique shape, and the moments of crisis when life’s programming encounters beautiful errors and necessary failures.
