The Roy L. Brooks Distinguished Lecture Series was established to bring an African American scholar of distinction or promise to campus. The award is named after Professor Roy L. Brooks, who has been a long-standing member of our community; an award-winning and engaging teacher; a prolific author of original scholarship; and a distinguished member of the legal profession and community. This year's Roy L. Brooks Distinguished Lecture Series will feature Professor Brooks himself, as he prepares to retire after 47 years of teaching. The Library of Congress recognizes Professor Brooks as a distinguished scholar both in the United States and internationally. Professor Brooks is published by prestigious presses, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cambridge, the University of California, and NYU. His books span various genres, including monographs, casebooks, textbooks, and even an anthology. Twenty of his books are held by 4,457 libraries, academic institutions, and learned societies worldwide. Join us for Professor Brooks' talk, titled "Living Memoir: Roy L. Brooks," in which he will discuss his life and legacy of scholarship. Professor Brooks will highlight several prominent themes within his literary works that have significantly influenced analyses of social justice, legal theory, and democratic theory. He will share how his innovative perspectives are deeply rooted in his personal life experiences, including the racially diverse middle-class neighborhood in which he was raised not far from Yale University. He will discuss his interdisciplinary studies in law, philosophy, history, sociology, political science, and anthropology; and his classmates at Yale Law School. Members' Open Studio is private time for those who hold a current membership with the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. This members-only opportunity provides members a private open studio session without the busy nature of regular open studio. Join us for the annual Independence Parade as it makes it way north on Coast Highway from Wisconsin Avenue to Civic Center Drive (just past City Hall). Come see floats, bands, walking groups, cool cars, and more. Our theme this year is "CELEBRATING OUR HERITAGE." A local tradition since 1892, the Oceanside Independence Parade is made possible by the assistance of over 100 volunteers. Viewing of the parade is available from the sidewalks along the entire route. Spectators are encouraged to bring folding chairs. The highest concentration of viewers will be on the north end of the route past Seagaze Drive. Parking Street parking is available on the residential side streets that run parallel to the entire route (Freeman and Tremont Streets). Over 1,000 parking spaces are available in the downtown parking lots and the parking structure (to enter the downtown area from the East, you will have to cross Coast Highway at Oceanside Blvd. or Surfrider Way). Then, it’s your turn to roll up your sleeves and try it for yourself, making two pieces of kintsugi to take home and enjoy. In our studio, you’ll receive all the materials needed, and our experienced instructor will guide you through the hands-on process. Dive into the world of video games at the San Diego Public Library’s 3rd annual Game Jam! Learn the basics of game development and design, then collaborate in teams to build your own game using Godot, RenPy, or Scratch. During the Game Jam, teams can work together remotely and/or in person to complete their projects and can attend optional drop-in sessions for instructor support. Games will be showcased and compete for prizes at the end of the jam. No experience is required. Registration is required. This program series is for youth in Grades 6 - 12.
