The San Diego Tap & Jazz Dance Festival is a vibrant 5-day community event dedicated to celebrating and preserving American Vernacular Dance and its African roots. Organized by Claudia Gomez, owner of Tap Into Yoga & Reiki and Summer Briggs, owner of Rap A Tap Center for the Arts, the festival will be held from Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, to Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Keiller Leadership Academy. This festival will feature a diverse range of activities, including tap dance, swing dance, jazz dance, African dance, and breaking classes, along with a music theory class, historical panel discussions, a faculty concert, a student showcase, social dances, and jam sessions. Daily classes will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with special events scheduled for the evenings. Renowned dance educators and musicians from San Diego and beyond will participate as faculty members and performers. The opening faculty concert, featuring a special African Drum and Dance company from San Diego, and a live jazz band, will kick off the festival on Saturday, November 23, at 7 p.m. Additional highlights include an open jam session at Panama 66 in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, and the student showcase on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024. With two restoration sites actively maintained, join HandsOn and Canyonlands in keeping the sites clean to better help the landscape and wildlife. Home to milkweed and other native plants, Olivia Canyon is a popular trail that is frequently used. Canyonlands wants to make sure the trails are clear and that the native plants are safe from potential fire. Your work will also assure that the plants present in the canyon will continue to thrive and be resilient in the face of the ever-present danger of climate change. The Buddhist Temple of San Diego is kicking off a series of seminars on end-of-life planning to start Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m., and continuing every other month. Shukatsu is a modern concept in Japan and refers to the many aspects of end-of-life planning. Without planning, one’s death causes anguish for loved ones, as difficult decisions are rushed during a period of emotional distress. But such difficulties can be avoided with good planning. The seminars are organized by Mitsuo Tomita, M.D., a local retired family physician, who will be joined by local experts in sharing information and who will serve as moderator. The event will run from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with light refreshments to follow. In this first session, Dr. Tomita will be joined by Shuji Masuda, RN, who is a certified Shukatsu counselor in Japan, and Akiko Morimoto, RN, CHPN, is a certified hospice nurse and palliative care nurse (CHPN) and is a team manager at Apreva Hospice. Sessions will cover the topics of advance care planning, POLST (Portable Medical Orders), dementia directives, funeral planning and natural alternatives, role of death doulas, how to avoid a “bad” death, Social Security and Medicare, and more. Sessions will be held in the temple’s Annex Hall, the top level of the two-story building in the southeast corner of the temple campus, at 2929 Market Street. Access is by stair or elevator via the main temple building. For growing families, onsite childcare is available during the seminar. JAR Senior Club (JSC), the first senior club in San Diego dedicated to bringing together seniors and local community resources at no cost to individuals 64 years old and older, will host the 3rd annual JSC Wellness Event during Long-Term Care Awareness Month on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 2340 East 8th St. National City CA 91950. Admission is free to all seniors and community members. JSC expects to draw over 200 attendees. The event will feature community resource booths, activities, music and entertainment, fashion show, food and refreshments, raffle prizes and more. JSC will award special recognition to those 85 years and older and a salute to senior veterans. The office of San Diego District Attorney and office of Chula Vista Mayor John McCann along with National City Mayor Ron Morrison and Vice Mayor Ditas will be present to speak on elder abuse and senior care. “The holiday season can sometimes bring feelings of sadness, especially for older adults who may reflect on how quickly time has passed or feel the absence of loved ones more deeply during this time of year,” said JSC Founder Angel Ogapong. “Having been the primary caregiver for my grandparents, I recognize the importance of encouraging seniors to stay proactive in their care for long-term health, which includes making sure they are knowledgeable on the valuable resources that are available to them.” Founded by San Diego native Angel Ogapong, JSC aims to provide seniors with a sense of belonging through community, engagement, education and health and wellness. JSC also assists seniors in navigating Medicare benefits and connecting them with additional resources they may not be aware of, all at no cost. Tagalog and Spanish translators will be available to assist. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) will be present to provide resources for low-income seniors. The Union of Pan Asian Communities (UPAC), the only organization throughout the county that offers mental health services for seniors, will also be available. Community partner American Medical Response (AMR) will provide free healthcare screenings for attendees. Local nonprofits including the National City Chamber of Commerce, Filipino American Chamber of Commerce Greater San Diego, National Latina Business Women Association San Diego, San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Olongapo City Bayanihan Club and Silayan Filipina will be at the event.
