Many Black San Diegans left or were forced out of their neighborhoods due to redlining, freeway construction, other policy decisions and the high cost of living. We dive into some of that history and ongoing efforts to revitalize that sense of community and cultural identity. But first, a breakdown of Proposition 50.

Join us for a lecture by Olivia Zen Joseph, curator of "Layered Narratives," developed during their time at Mingei as the Quilt Fellow. This talk explores how quilts from the era and firsthand accounts of Black American experiences reframe the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition — the United States’ first World’s Fair. While the Centennial aimed to celebrate national identity and innovation, the lecture sheds light on the overlooked contributions and voices of Black women and the Black community, expanding understanding of this historic event through stories too often left untold. Olivia Zen Joseph is a Program Coordinator at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino and the curator of "Layered Narratives: Quilted Stories of Gender & Race at the 1876 Centennial." Drawn to interpretation, history, and storytelling, they are passionate about uncovering the complex meanings and histories embedded in art and objects. Olivia entered the museum field through an internship in Collections Management and Conservation at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. "Exercise is a way we express ourselves with our bodies; someone who creates art on canvas is also expressing themselves. To me life is about emotional expression and having a safe space to embody that. So I wanted to join these two elements together to create a space of safety and community." Batter, one of the featured artists, says she was always creating art as a child and teenager. She had good fortune to be born into a family who encouraged her creativity, and a grade school program that exposed her to the Masters and a college degree in Art History. After a 40-year hiatus from art while she ran her boutique PR & Marketing firm, and the surprise blessing of the Pandemic, she has renewed her connection to art, creating through multiple mediums and subjects. Her home studio is chock full of colorful paints, and every art supply you could dream about. She actively explores her creativity through classes at Mira Costa College, plus several renowned workshops including Nicholas Wilton’s Art2Life Creative Visioning Program (CVP), Art2Life Spark, and Jenny Nelson. Laurie is a member of AGNC (Artist Group of North County) and the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance. Her work is focused mostly on small stories about humanity that touch the human soul. LOS/NR is proud to present the work of six impressive artists living and working in Los Angeles, curated by our guest curator, Jason Jenn. The exhibition gathers painting, assemblage, fiber-based art, and sculpture to explore the varied ways that time weaves itself into the human experience. Time can be sweet or savage in its treatment, and each piece offers a different perspective on life through its varied minutes and milestones, through gestures, textures, fragments, and forms. Through the exchange of materials, the artists chart emotional landscapes and trace the rhythms that shape our daily lives. What we choose to hold onto, what we take time to craft, and what we carry forward define the ways in which we come to comprehend "The Measure of Our Days." Participating artists are: Enrique Castrejon, Ellen Friedlander, Duane Paul, Joaquin Stacey-Calle, Kayla Tange, and Sean Yang.
