  • For over 40 years, the Student Nutrition Organization (SNO) of San Diego State University has served the local community through volunteering, advocacy, and philanthropy. We have strived for our members to develop strong professional and community relationships, and this gala is how we give back to our community locally and nationally. This year’s gala will benefit Mama’s Kitchen, supporting initiatives toward improving the health and well-being of individuals and families vulnerable to malnutrition from chronic illness. This year, the 12th Annual Josephson-Spindler SNO Gala will take place at The Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center on SDSU’s campus. Against a backdrop of Old Hollywood Glam, we will gather in support of our shared commitment to nutrition, sustainability, and community impact.Guests are encouraged to embrace the theme with semi-formal attire, with ties and gala dresses welcomed to enhance the evening’s timeless elegance. The evening will feature a fundraising silent auction with exclusive items and experiences, a curated dinner menu with locally sourced seasonal ingredients, an open bar with our signature drinks, and more engaging entertainment with a dynamic master of ceremonies. Fundraised proceeds from this event will go directly to Mama’s Kitchen as our intended beneficiary. SNO is very proud to support such an impactful cause. We are also honored to announce that our keynote speaker this evening will be Dr. James Sallis. James F. Sallis, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health at University of California San Diego and Professorial Fellow at Australian Catholic University, Melbourne. He taught for 22 years at San Diego State University. He has led research to understand policy and environmental influences on physical activity, nutrition, and obesity, with studies conducted across all age groups in the US. Dr. Sallis is co-founder of the International Physical Activity and Environment Network (IPEN) that conducted coordinated studies of adults and adolescents in about 20 countries. He has authored over 850 scientific publications and is one of the world’s most cited authors in any field, with over 250,000 citations. He is currently focusing on getting research used to create active, healthy, and sustainable cities. Dr. Sallis is Past-President of Society of Behavioral Medicine, member of the US National Academy of Medicine, and has won numerous national and international awards. Dr. Sallis will be presenting to the audience on the topic of “Environments Shape Eating Behaviors, But We Can Shape Those Environments”. The presentation aims to shed light on the dynamic relationship between our environment and nutrition. Registered Dietitians may earn CEUs through this event. • With immigration arrests increasing, San Diego is bracing for an even bigger crackdown.
  • Art has long been a way for people to carry pieces of home with them — across borders, languages and generations. Join Daylight San Diego for Making Home: How Immigrants Use Art to Find Belonging, a conversation with artists Josue Baltezar, Victor Castañeda H, Fernanda Gaspar and Amara Sengamphan about how creative practices help immigrant communities build identity, connection and a sense of place. This event marks the launch of the Daylight Culture Club, a new series of arts and culture gatherings designed to bring people together to learn, create and connect. Each event will feature conversations with artists, cultural leaders or creatives, along with time for participants to make art together in a welcoming, community-centered space. Following the panel discussion, guests will be invited to stay and craft in community. Some craft supplies will be provided, and attendees are also encouraged to bring their own projects — whether that’s knitting, drawing, collage, embroidery or another creative practice — and work alongside others. Daylight will hold the event at Doh Doh Coffee, a small business run by Karen refugees, where art created by and for their community is featured. The goal is simple: create a space where people can talk about art, make art and build community together. Tickets are available on a sliding scale at $5, $10 or $15. March 28 1-3 p.m. Doh Doh Coffee, 5591 University Ave., San Diego, CA 92105 Space is limited, so reserve your ticket today to secure your spot. Additional details, including panelists and crafting activities, will be announced soon. Want to support this event? • Join Ashley McGirt-Adair, author and licensed therapist, for a powerful live conversation about her book "The Cost of Healing in Silence: Navigating Racial Trauma and the Call for Culturally Responsive Care." In conversation with San Diego author, Joi Jackson, Ashley explores the emotional cost of unspoken pain, racial trauma, and the courage it takes to heal out loud. This discussion centers stories often overlooked and asks what becomes possible when we stop carrying it all alone. • Join us at Oceanside Museum of Art for a hands-on Silkscreen Printmaking Workshop on Sunday, April 12, from 2–5 p.m. Guided by artist and educator Frol Boundin, Associate Faculty for Art at MiraCosta College, participants will learn the fundamentals of silkscreen printing and create their own original prints to take home. This workshop is inspired by OMA’s "Matrix Multiplied: Hybrid Approaches to Printmaking" exhibition, which explores the dynamic world of printmaking and the idea of the “matrix,” which is the surface from which multiple prints are created. The exhibition highlights how artists use printmaking techniques to produce repeated images while experimenting with variation, layering, and color. Silkscreen printing is one of the most iconic methods for multiplying images, making it a perfect entry point into the themes of the exhibition. During the session, Frol will introduce the tools and processes of silkscreen printing and guide participants step-by-step through preparing a screen, applying ink, and pulling prints. All materials are included in the workshop fee, and no prior experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to get a little messy. Come explore the art of making multiples and leave with a set of your own hand-printed works. Ticket Prices: Adult: $75 Member: $55 Space is limited. Register today!
