  • Pendry San Diego is hosting a Summer Wellness Soirée this Friday, August 8 — a rooftop beauty and wellness event at The Pool House. The event kicks off with a morning Pilates class led by SALTVAULT, followed by refreshing poolside bites and bubbles. Guests can also enjoy wellness and retail cabanas curated by Spa Pendry including a complimentary post workout cool down with Hyperice, red light recovery with Higher Dose and KNESKO, summer style cabanas with LSPACE, and more. Attendees will enjoy special offers and all-day access at The Pool House and Spa Pendry. Doors open at 9 a.m., and the 50-minute SALTVAULT class will begin at 10:00am. Lite bites and bubbles from The Pool House will be served at 11 a.m. Shopping and wellness cabanas will be open until 2 p.m. Guests are asked to enter the event via The Pool House entrance on Fifth Avenue.   • Camino Books welcomes award-winning author Shobha Rao for a discussion and signing of her novel "Indian Country" on Thursday, August 14 at 6 p.m., on the Pacific Breeze Cafe Deck at Del Mar Plaza. Joining Rao in conversation will be Jason Blitman, who hosts the podcast "Gays Reading." "Indian Country" follows a newly arranged married couple’s journey from India to Montana, and their firsthand experiences enduring colonialism and racism in the American West. Rao, who moved to the United States at age seven, is also the author of the short story collection, "An Unrestored Woman," and the novel, "Girls Burn Brighter." Rao is also the winner of the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Fiction and was a Grace Paley Teaching Fellow at The New School. The event is free and open to the public. Our panel is: Brian Adams, of the SDSU Political Science Department. His book: "Campaign Finance in Local Elections: Buying the Grassroots" examines whether the campaign finance system undermines the capacity of local elections to enhance the democratic character of American elections. Lucas Robinson, investigative reporter for the San Diego Union-Tribune. His work has covered politics, the courts, schools and the pandemic. He will report on his recent investigation of SANDAG's failure to reform no-bid contracting. David Edward Burke, founder of Citizens Take Action. This nonprofit supports policies and programs that enhance the voices of individuals within our political system. As an attorney, he has worked in Congress, coordinated statewide ballot initiatives, and clerked for two Superior Court judges, among other nonprofit work.
