BWSD x WAHN Two community forces coming together to kick off Black History Month the right way. Imani, the owner of Black Women SD, has been intentionally creating safe spaces to celebrate Blackness in San Diego. This time, she’s collaborating with Jordan Kai, a long standing community organizer and the founder and event producer behind We Are Here Now SD, to bring that vision to the dance floor. With MYYON and DJ Kitana on the decks, this is more than a party. It’s a dance event rooted in Black arts, culture, and really good music. A space to move, connect, and celebrate who we are and where we come from. Come dance with us. Come celebrate Black history, Black creativity, and Black joy—together.

This engaging reception and talk by Bronwen Wilson will explore the poses and gestures in Renaissance portraits, revealing the inventive ways women - led by the trailblazing Sofinisba Anguissola - used "the mute eloquence of gesture" to make their paintings speak. In an era when portraiture was often dismissed as a mechanical skill suited to women perceived to lack imagination, these artists defied convention. They infused their sitters with personality, narrative, and emotion - proving that a glance, a hand, or the tilt of a head could speak volumes. Carter Chair in European Art at UCLA, where she also directs the Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies and the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. She currently serves as Vice President of the Renaissance Society of America. Her research focuses on early modern visual culture, with particular interests in portraiture, physiognomy, and cross-cultural exchange. She has published widely on these topics and is the editor and co-editor of several recent volumes. In this talk, Anamaria Labao Cabato, Executive Director of the Philippine Performing Arts Company (PASACAT), will share an overview of the regions of the Philippines and their respective cultures through dance, music, and textiles. Anamaria will also discuss PASACAT’s partnership with Mingei and its upcoming Community Spotlight installation, which will be on view outside the Museum from mid-December through mid-January. About Anamaria Cabato Anamaria Cabato is the Executive Director of PASACAT, where she has served since its founding in 1970, first as a dancer, musician, and vocalist before stepping into leadership in 1983. A San Diego State University graduate with a B.S. in Business Administration, Cabato discovered her cultural identity through Philippine dance, inspiring her lifelong dedication to promoting Filipino arts and heritage. She has been recognized for her leadership and community service with honors such as the KFMB-TV 8 Cares Award and the Ladies of Elegance Award. In 2021, she co-chaired the "Filipinos of South Bay" exhibit at the Chula Vista Library, highlighting the migration and history of San Diego’s Filipino community. You will be sure to leave with a head full of inspiration and some new buddies to help with your next sticky patch (tangled yarn, muddy painting, skewed sculpture, pile of unruly popsicle sticks, wobbly hem, the list goes on!).
