Grab your vintage surfboard (or beach chair) and gather for a nostalgic longboard competition at the North Side of Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club presents their annual longboard surfing contest. All contestants must surf on 1969 or older longboards, 9’ or longer, with no leash. There are separate divisions for Open, Wahine and Menehune (youth 16 years old and under). Join us for an introspective death awareness experience that will take you through the last months of your life as you prepare for death and have to say goodbye to loved ones, possessions, personal goals and dreams, and daily activities that bring you joy. Our guided meditative experience walks you through the last months of your life where you'll need to prioritize what is truly important to you and then come face to face with saying goodbye to the people, places and things that bring meaning to your everyday life. Once you've said your final goodbye, our end-of-life doulas will tend to your body as our ancestors did by wrapping you in a burial shroud where you'll be able to contemplate the experience of death in a safe, protective cocoon. In this workshop with side coach Aretha Sills open to players of all experience levels, we’ll explore Viola Spolin’s games and exercises that inspire theatrical improvisers to get out of the head and into the present time without any expectation of performing or being “on.” Our goal is to experience the many benefits of spontaneity and group play. Through a combination of meditative warm ups, sensory-awareness exercises, and delightful traditional children’s games, we’ll aim to have fun, release the intuition, and open up new avenues of personal expression. We will (briefly) touch on some of the contemporary brain science that helps us understand why Spolin’s work is so helpful in regulating our nervous systems, and find ways to take her playful methods into our everyday life when we find ourselves under pressure.
