We’re thrilled to announce a new initiative this summer: Sonidos Del Barrio – a free, family-friendly, three-part concert series at Cesar Chavez Park celebrating music, wellness, and community connection. This vibrant event will feature live entertainment in the park, a DJ set at the end of the pier overlooking the bay, local art and vendors, wellness activities like yoga and sound bowl healing, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for families to enjoy together. Most importantly, we are working to make this event as accessible and inclusive as possible. THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER: Reuben Herzl is a San Diego-based video strategist and documentary video producer whose career spans architecture, technology, and storytelling. In 2017, he founded Groundmaking, a video production company that empowers nonprofits to reach their fundraising and marketing goals through compelling storytelling. His clients include Heluna Health, the California Community Foundation, Koreatown Youth and Community Center, Carlsbad Educational Foundation, Descanso Gardens, and The Trust for Public Land. Reuben frequently speaks at conferences like the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference, sharing insights to inspire emerging storytellers. Previously, he was Chief Creative Officer at Aclima, where he led creative initiatives in environmental technology for clients like Google and the US General Services Administration. Holding a Master’s in Architecture from Yale and a Bachelor’s in International Economics from UC San Diego, Reuben brings a unique, multidisciplinary approach to his work. Enjoy a beautiful summer evening at San Diego Botanic Garden during Summer Nights every Thursday in July featuring live music and extended hours. This week, rep your favorite tropical shirt or dress to enjoy the joyful, laid-back music of Island Mist Band! Representing the Mariana Islands — Guam, Saipan, Tinian, and Rota — this talented group features Janice on guitar, Lilly and Robert on ukuleles, and Benni on U-Bass. Members of the House of Chamorros at Balboa Park, the band has been sharing their “Island Style” music for over six years. Come dance and listen to the blend of Chamorro, Hawaiian, traditional, nostalgic, and contemporary songs, perfect for celebrating a summer evening! A bar with craft beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and light snacks will be available each night. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks. Pack a picnic, get cozy, and make the most of your evening in the Garden! Join the San Diego River Park Foundation for a special Winter Solstice sunset hike to the top of one of our newly acquired open space properties, Lillian Hill Preserve. A top Lillian Hill, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Three Sisters Waterfall and the expansive San Diego River Gorge, including Eagle Peak, El Capitan Mountain, and other mountain tops in San Diego! Please bring a headlamp or flashlight and plenty of drinking water for the hike. We also recommend closed-toed shoes and long pants. This hike is a 1.5-mile out-and-back trail with a 270-foot elevation gain. It is considered 'easy to moderate,' but should not be undertaken by individuals who are not comfortable on uneven trail surfaces or hiking uphill. For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event. Please note: This event is located in the heart of a wilderness area. For your safety, stay close to our experienced staff and volunteers throughout the event. Potential hazards include rattlesnakes, mountain lions, poison oak, and loose footing. What is Lillian Hill? An expansive 80-acre property at Lillian Hill was placed on the market for potentially five building sites. Surrounded by National Forest, its development would have had a significant impact. We set out to buy this land to conserve it forever for the badgers, cougars, eagles, falcons, majestic oaks, and more. Now that it has been purchased, we can begin removing the scars of decades of land use and start the healing process. Directions: Google Maps: Lillian Hill Attire: Long pants and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended with layers! Items to Bring: Headlamp, drinking water, light jacket, and a snack. Additional Notes: Download directions before leaving Descanso, as cell service is spotty in this area. The nearest restroom is located at the Three Sisters Trailhead parking lot, five minutes further up Boulder Creek Road. To reach the preserve, you’ll travel on a dirt road, which is in good condition and suitable for sedan cars. For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event.
