Brainstory’s new album Sounds Good, simply put, lives up to its name. Based in L.A. but hailing from the Inland Empire's own Rialto, CA, two-thirds of Brainstory, Kevin and Tony Martin are brothers by blood, while Eric Hagstrom is a brother through their music and long term friendship. While the group's initial connection comes from the heady mixture of jazz-performance-focused music school and the grind of playing local shows, their bond has been strengthened through countless hours on the road touring and the making of two studio records—2019’s debut full-length, Buck, followed by 2021’s Ripe EP. "Being on the road, doing our own tours, and backing incredible people like Lady Wray, has sharpened our skills and really revved us up for this record," Kevin says. "It's been four years since our last full length record, and with everything that's happened since, it's like we've been catching up to ourselves." That's one way to describe change: catching up to oneself. Each member of Brainstory has gone through shifts, both personally and musically, and all of that thread through this record. Since they started the band they have constantly faced situations that forced them to rise to the occasion. They got signed to Big Crown Records, they stepped up their game. Covid happened, they learned to record themselves. They started touring a ton sharing the stage with the likes of Lady Wray and they got their live show super tight. All of this time spent grinding and growing has certainly paid off. The path to take their art to the next level is clearer than ever and once again, they are here for it. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. July 30 – Aug. 20 (4 weeks, 12 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio This course is for the beginner abstract painter or a refresher for the seasoned artist. This class is designed for you to tap into your intuition and discover your own style through embracing the process. While practicing the principles of abstract acrylic painting, we will work to find a balance between using these techniques and learning to trust our intuition. The focus will be on process, as we learn together how to start, loosen up, take risks, trust our gut, lean into our emotions, and let go of perfection in our paintings. Along with the foundations of color, composition, and line/shape, we will practice intuitive mark making and layering and allowing each of these to inform what comes next on the canvas. As your artistic voice unfolds, your own unique visual language will appear. Materials: Variety of brushes; any tools, palette knives, wedges, color shapers you have (not necessary, but helpful); acrylic paint in various colors (your favorites but also Titanium White and Raw Umber); palette or palette paper; small canvas (no smaller than 12” x 12”) and any size larger canvas. Note: If you're a beginner, bring a basic starter set of paints or even craft paints. No need to go out and purchase a bunch of expensive paints! A medium-bodied paint is best, but using a variety of fluid medium and heavy-bodied paints will give your work more interest. The series continues on June 11 with former San Diego residents vocalist Gillian Margot and Geoffrey Keezer (piano), featuring music from their eponymous new duo album. For this Athenaeum date, they are joined by Ben Williams on bass and San Diego jazz hero Peter Sprague on guitar. With an exquisite voice, a disarmingly wide vocal range, and a style that is deeply rooted in the tradition of the great jazz vocalists, Margot possesses a gift of storytelling and stunning lyrical delivery. A native of Toronto, Canada, Margot studied under a generation of jazz legends including Oscar Peterson, Freddy Cole, Carol Welsman, and Norman Simmons. Keezer is a GRAMMY-winning pianist, composer, arranger, and producer based in New York City, where he first moved in 1989 to become the final pianist with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Keezer has toured and recorded with a galaxy of stars including Ray Brown, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Sting, and Christian McBride. Partners in music since 2014 and in life since 2016, both Margot and Keezer share a predisposition to address, in Margot’s words, “different styles, genres, or grooves and feels, and harmonic implications,” an attitude that accounts for the capacious range of repertoire in their performances. A spirit of freedom judiciously balanced with collective consciousness pervades their recent recording, as Keezer and Margot mind meld on a half-dozen “Standard” standards along with authoritatively interpreted songs by Hermeto Pascoal, Peter Gabriel, Chick Corea, and Donald and Dorothy Brown. On a dark, windy night, Carlsbad Oceanside Art League artists haunted the kitchen at the North Coastal Art Gallery to whip up a most gruesome abode: the spooky COAL mansion. Is up for grabs from October 1 through October 27 at the gallery. One picked up a pencil and said, “This should be drawn and quartered.” Another grabbed a bewitched brush and said, “I’m going to paint this house, red…. or blue. Well, no, we need the whole spectrum for this.“ Another grabbed a slab of gingerbread and said, “I think my knife is sharp enough.” Another gathered ghastly, green fondant and silently fashioned it into phantasms. When it was complete, they screamed with ardent admiration and said, “What a delightfully dilapidated domicile to display!" Stop in, a must see at the Gallery.
