In this installation of hand-gathered California grasses, artist Helena Westra creates a space shaped by slowness, reflection, and return. The title comes from the agricultural term “lying fallow,” used when a field is left unplanted for a season so the soil can restore its strength. For Westra, this idea becomes a metaphor for creative and personal renewal. Westra's installation draws from her own search for balance in a world that constantly demands effort and productivity. Elevated here instead is her deep reverence for the land, a connection between the cycles of her own body and the seasons, and the quiet, in-between moments we often overlook. This exhibition straddles late summer into fall, inviting visitors into a space that feels both grounded and dreamlike, where time slows down and the border between the external world and the inner self begins to blur. This is a show about pausing. About listening. About what can only grow after a period of stillness. "Lying Fallow" offers a soft-landing place for memory, for imagination, and for whatever may come next. "Lying Fallow" es una pradera dorada llevada al interior y una invitación al descanso. In this calming, hands-on workshop, the art of embroidery is combined with the practice of mindfulness– no prior experience needed! The workshop will cover the fundamentals of embroidery, including the foundational stitches, and how to use color, texture, and pattern to create a unique hand embroidered piece. The session will begin in the museum gallery, with a guided tour of the current exhibitions. Participants will discuss the work on display, and draw inspiration from the featured themes and techniques. Participants will then learn the basic techniques of embroidery, as well as how to use it as a mindful way of connecting with themselves and the moment, before creating a final piece of their own. Participants will receive an embroidery hoop, tea towel, needle and thread to finish their project at home. No experience needed. All materials included. Local artists and galleries in El Cajon are coming together to host the 14th Annual Alley Cat Art Walk. This free, family-friendly event promises fine art, live entertainment, boutique vendors, and more along Main Street and Rea Avenue. Hosted by the art galleries, studios, museums, and small businesses in the historic Downtown El Cajon district, the Art Walk is a yearly celebration of the city’s flourishing creative scene. Along with special gallery shows, attendees can explore interactive art displays, artisanal craft booths while enjoying live music, beer on tap, and other entertainment. With all venues within walking distance, it’s easy to shop, discover new artists, and take in the range of artistic styles and mediums. Arts Alley will have many exciting new exhibits on display for the event. A highlight will be Sophie’s Gallery’s latest show "Passageways: Sea Life," which explores ocean life and experiences living by the coast, with pieces made from donated, upcycled and reimagined materials. The show includes mosaic fish and seascapes, beaded sea creature sculptures, wooden buoy wind chimes, aquatic-inspired accessories, and more. More must-sees down Arts Alley include "Summer Triptych" at SC Fine Art & Framing, an immersive exhibit featuring three distinct artistic voices exploring nature, social connectivity, and speculative futures. The Olaf Wieghorst Museum will display "The Etchings of Olaf Wieghorst," 27 original etchings from 1937-1940, including one original etching plate. The museum is also sponsoring the Alley Cat Art Walk Passport, highlighting participating businesses and galleries. Once attendees visit each business and get their Passport stamped by all, they can return to the museum to enter a raffle to win a special Olaf Wieghorst print. Other special exhibits include Bronze Sculptures at White Sage Gallery, Animal Portraits & Paint Parties at Rich Artist Studio, "Resilient Spirits" by Charlene Mosley at East County Art Association, and Eiffel Tower Paintings by Sophie’s Artists at Rob's BrewPoint. It has happened to all of us before. We walk into a family gathering and rather than saying hello, our child darts the other way and tries to hide behind us. This can make us feel self conscious. Temperament is a child’s inborn way of approaching the world — the “why” that explains the meaning of her behavior.

Celebrate Native American culture and community with the Barona Band of Mission Indians at the 53rd Annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day Weekend. The three-day celebration begins on Friday, August 29 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. followed by a grand entry of dancers in full regalia at 8 p.m. The event continues Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Hundreds of Native American dancers from across the country will compete and showcase traditional and contemporary dance styles including the Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance. Alongside the dancing, visitors can enjoy Hand Drum contests, singing, drumming, and food favorites like Indian fry bread tacos. A wide selection of arts, crafts, and handmade jewelry will also be available from local and traveling vendors.
