Efforts Underway for Ballot Measure to End Death Penalty

Signature-gathering efforts are getting underway in California for a ballot measure that would end the death penalty.

Appraiser Francis Wahlgren of Christie's discovers a rare piece of regional history: a book of Mexican War illustrations originally published in 1851. Written by New Orleans Picayune newspaper founder and first American war correspondent George Wilkins Kendall and illustrated from the battlefield by German artist Carl Nebel, this exquisitely executed collection of colorplates boasts an insurance value of $45,000 to $50,000.

At "Antiques Roadshow" in Providence, Rhode Island, appraiser Bill Guthman hits the bull's eye when he targets a rare Mathewson rifle, powder horn and log book. Guthman attributes the items, handed down through seven generations of the owner's family, to Welcome Mathewson, one of early 19th-century New England's premier gunsmiths. Declaring the item a "national treasure," and one of the most rare and valuable firearms objects ever appraised on ROADSHOW, Guthman values the collection at $100,000 to $120,000.
