Philanthropies Supported by Assistance League of Greater San Diego: OPERATION SCHOOL BELL – We provide clothing and school supplies for underserved students in our community to help them look and feel their best, ensuring they are engaged in education and they thrive academically, regardless of their circumstances. COMMUNITY SUPPORT – We provide clothing and supplies to unhoused people (both children and adults), victims of domestic abuse, foster youth, refugee families, community resource centers, and victims of emergencies such as floods and fires. ENRICHING FOSTER YOUTH – We help to expose foster youth to the arts with a focus on visual arts, music and performing arts in local venues by partnering with local foster organizations. BOOK BUDDIES – We assist students to become lifelong learners by collaborating with their teachers to encourage reading by practicing reading either in person or online in a one on one or group setting. OPERATION LOANER HEARING AID – We provide short term loaner hearing aids for newborns to young adults up to 21 who are waiting for replacements which can take 6 months. We also provide long term use for low-income families and children with significant hearing loss. We partner with San Diego United School District (East and South Counties) and SDSU Audiology Department. SNEAKERS FOR MILITARY PRESCHOOLERS – We provide sneakers, Bombas socks, sweatshirts, pants, pajamas, sunsuits and jackets for children of enlisted military personnel in partnership with STEP (Support the Enlisted Program). TWAIN HIGH SCHOOL – We provide recognition events to support students in this alternative high school program on the main campus, Mira Mesa, Morse, Crawford and Hoover High School campuses. We also provide financial scholarship support for students attending one of San Diego’s community colleges. UPPER DIVISION SCHOLARSHIPS – We provide scholarships for fulltime students who have completed community college and are transitioning to an accredited college or university in pursuit of a four-year degree or continuing in those community colleges that offer baccalaureate degrees.

The Coronado Library was founded in 1890. The original library was built as a classical building that architect Harrison Albright designed in 1909. The building still stands at 640 Orange Avenue located in the heart of the Coronado community. This original building serves as the Spreckels Reading Room within the 40,000 square feet remodeled and expanded library building. The library includes study space at tables and carrels, lounge seating, wireless Internet access, a large public meeting room, conference room, study rooms, separate Children's Library and Teen area, public-access computers, and collections in various subjects and formats. The library also has several large exhibit spaces where we display curated art from the local Coronado and San Diego community and museum-like curated cultural exhibits. This summer, the library will host "Alice: Illustrating Wonderland," a special exhibit celebrating 160 years of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In honor of this milestone, we invite artists of all ages to reimagine the whimsy and wonder of Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale. Choose a character or scene that inspires you—from the Mad Hatter’s tea party to Alice’s encounter with the Queen of Hearts—and craft your own two-dimensional masterpiece. Winners will receive prizes, and at least 10 pieces from each age category will be featured in the exhibit alongside 160 beautifully illustrated editions of the book. Coffee with Kafka and the UCSD German Studies Program present a free screening of "The Glory of Life," the award-winning film about the surprising love affair between the literary genius Franz Kafka and his last love, Dora Diamant, in the last year of his life. The film is open to the public and will be screened on the UCSD campus at the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UCSD. "The Glory of Life" premiered in 2024 in Berlin and has been nominated for three national German Film Awards. On Friday, May 9, 2025, at 8 p.m., join us for a once-in-a-lifetime tribute concert to three of Mexico's most iconic musical figures -- Vicente Fernández, Juan Gabriel, and Rocío Dúrcal -- at the Magnolia Theater in El Cajon. This special concert, titled "Tribute to Three Greats," will feature a stunning performance by Mariachi Champaña Nevin, a world-renowned ensemble led by composer and trumpeter Jeff Nevin, Ph.D., who is widely considered a leading proponent of classical mariachi music. This unforgettable evening will transport the audience through a collection of timeless songs from these legendary artists, each performance evoking deep memories and emotions. With a 14-piece Mariachi accompanied by a 10-piece symphony orchestra, the show promises to be an emotional celebration of Mexico's musical heritage. Mariachi Champaña Nevin, who has been performing together internationally for the past five years, will bring the sounds of Mexico to life in a unique and breathtaking way. This will be the group's first performance in San Diego this year. Producer and promoter Javier Lugo, who grew up listening to the music of Fernández, Gabriel, and Dúrcal, has big plans to take this tribute on the road to share their unforgettable legacy with even more audiences.
