  • About the exhibition: A colorful mix of symbolic forms, representations of abstract thought, and expressions of shared universal mysteries are at the heart of the work Ving Simpson created for more than twenty years at his home studio in Oceanside. The installation is a nonlinear representation of years of creative artistic endeavors, processes, and materials crafted with primal and soulful qualities. A central focus of the gallery is a recreation of the shelves that lined the artist’s studio, displaying an array of small, emblematic sculptures. The objects and compositions are minimal in form, often consisting of repeating patterns in rows and columns. They are constructed from a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials including silver, bronze, wood, metal, tar paper, found objects, and glazed and unglazed clay bodies. Select paintings will also illustrate the artist’s explorations into his perceptions of reality, primarily a series of large banners in the museum’s Grand Stairwell exploring artistic interpretations of water as liquid, gas, and solid. His first painting on canvas, Dancing Nuns painted in 1994, will also feature prominently as an homage to the complexities of interpersonal relationships and how they may inspire an impulse to expand creative horizons. This is the work of a dedicated artist–a maker of well-crafted art objects inspired by a mix of art history, science, and a personal mythology, woven together in an attempt to understand the subtle and sublime mysteries of reality. Simpson says about his practice, “The human path is one of symbols and abstractions. Lacking the facility to fathom the intricacies and mathematics of modern cosmology, I choose to explore the order of the universe using a few simple tools and my intuition.” Curated by Vallo Riberto. Exhibition celebration: 5-7 p.m. Mar. 30. Related links: Oceanside Museum of Art: website | Instagram | Facebook

  • About the event: San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library present Labyrinth, a music and dance performance co-created by Kristopher and Dina Apple. Labyrinths have been used throughout history as devices for meditation, metaphors for storytelling, and as a bridge between the physical and metaphysical. Taking inspiration from these mythologies and practices, a cross-disciplinary ensemble weaves sound, movement, and text into a contemplative listening experience—a listening labyrinth. You are invited to the listening labyrinth—to follow the thread of now, gather your senses at each passing moment, and reflect on the potential for transformation. About the performers: Kristopher and Dina are music and dance makers from San Diego, California, whose work explores cross-disciplinary ensemble practices and performance-making that is often improvised and interactive. Kristopher is a violinist and composer working at the intersection of music, dance, text, and digital media. He teaches digital audio at the University of San Diego, accompanies dance classes at UC San Diego, MiraCosta College, and Palomar College, and has recently been a featured composer and performer with LITVAKdance, IMAGOmoves, and San Diego Dance Theater. • The students in this workshop will delve into the more formal forms of poetry styles; their histories and contemporary usage. We will continue to discuss the design and organization of complete books of poetry, both the chapbook and the full book. Each participant will choose two books of poetry and complete the analysis of both the poems and the structure/organization of the books, submit, by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the books and be ready to give a short presentation about the findings to the class of one of the books. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop. Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Poetry, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. • In this talk, RamĂrez will set forth an introduction to brown artistic practices that put neo-colonial and liberal reason in crisis. Furthermore, he seeks to think about the paradoxical relationship between contemporary art and indigeneity as a creative entanglement that reshapes the repertoires of art history and museum collections. Pablo JosĂ© RamĂrez is a curator and an author. He is a curator at the Hammer Museum and co-curated "Made in LA 2023: Acts of Living" together with Diana Nawi. He was the inaugural adjunct curator of "First Nations and Indigenous Art" at Tate Modern (2019-2023). Ramirez was a co-curator of the 19th Paiz Biennale: Transvisible and part of the curatorial team of the 58th Carnegie International. He is the co-founder of Infrasonica, a leading curatorial platform for non-Western sonic cultures. He holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths University of London.
