Explore clay surface design techniques — Sgraffito & Stencils! From 6-8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, January 7, 14, 21, 28 & February 11 In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes and slips. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course while applying handmade stencils and layering techniques with colorful patterns as well textured colorful designs using the sgraffito technique. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. All materials provided. Learn Plain Weave, Clasped Weft & Hemstitching! Sunday, January 25, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Have you wanted to dive into the mindful, rhythmic, magic of weaving? In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. Beginners, as well as those with weaving experience are welcome. No experience necessary. The Besos Jazz Trio has been stirring up audiences with vibrant performances of music and dance since 2017. These worldly performers are a study in balancing traditions. With roots in Mexican ballet folklorico, Claudia Gomez plays percussion and tap dances. Evona Wascinski, from Poland, brings a classical virtuosity to the upright bass. And Beston Barnett, a Nashville native, plays manouche guitar and sings in five languages. “We keep it loose but alive; we leave space for what each of us does best,” says Wascinski. Together, they improvise, sing, and dance their way through an eclectic stew of swing tunes and sambas, boleros and musettes, original compositions and more.
