  • Sunday, June 18 at 1:30 p.m. Do what dad wants to do today......I bet if you asked him.......he'd want to see some killer blues!! We've got the Memphis Kings!! The Memphis Kings are a blues and roots band based in southern california. Originally formed over fifteen years ago with the intent to be a support band for touring musicians. The band’s sound has been influenced by the musicians they have supported. Over the years they have worked with California legends Lynwood Slim, James Harman, Big Jay Mc Neely, Big Sandy and Kid Ramos. They have also worked as the international musicians Nico Duportal, Si Cranstoun, and Paul Pigat to name a few. The band consists of drummer Ron Felton, bassist Jack O Roonie, and guitarist Tommy Harkenrider. The band often includes special guests for their shows. When available the Memphis Kings include Mando Dorame on Tenor Sax. Individually it’s members have performed nationally and internationally, and have respected recordings credits. Opening the show all the way from the UK are the Barrelhouse Kings’. These young multi-instrumental musicians perform traditional blues with authenticity. Their performances are an experience, and not to be missed. This will be their first time performing in California. Stay Connected on Social Media! Facebook & Instagram

In her galvanizing sixth collection of poems, Marilyn Chin once again turns moral outrage into unforgettable art. A rambunctious take on our contemporary condition, Sage shifts skillfully in tone and register from powerful poems on social justice and the pandemic to Daoist wild girl satire. A self-described "activist-subversive-radical-immigrant-feminist-transnational-Buddhist-neoclassical-nerd poet," Chin is always reinventing herself. In Sage, she sings fearless identity anthems, pulls farcical details from an old diary, and confronts the disturbing rise in violence against Asian Americans. Leaping between colloquialisms and vivid imagery, anger and humor, she merges the personal and political with singular, resilient spirit. Whether she is spinning tall tales, mixing Chinese poems with hip-hop rhymes, reinventing lovelorn folk songs with a new-world anxiety, or penning a raucous birthday poem, a heartrending elegy, or an "un-gratitude" prayer, Chin offers dazzling surprises at every turn Marilyn Chin was born in Hong Kong. She is the author of five previous poetry collections and a novel. Her work has appeared in The Norton Anthology of Contemporary Poetry, The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women, and Best American Poetry, among other publications. She is the recipient of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for lifetime achievement, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the PEN/Josephine Miles Literary Award, and fellowships from the United States Artists Foundation and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, among other honors. A chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, she lives in San Diego, California. Stay Connected on Social Media: Twitter + Linkedin
  • VirgoTwins — the Chicago-born/West Coast-based duo of MC Gilead7 (of Chicago hip-hop legends Tomorrow Kings) and San Diego-based underground producer Boricua Sandy (Roc Marciano, 2MEX). The duo is performing at Corazon del Barrio on Saturday, July 8 in support of their new album, "ArtSpace" (out now). "ArtSpace" is a ten-song meditation reminiscent of underground hip-hop during the early 2000s (think Atmosphere’s "Overcast!" And Sonic Sum’s "The Sanity Index"). Sandy — known for her work in San Diego’s underground scene — produced the album’s lush and intelligent instrumentals while Gilead7 floats imaginative and sharp bars on top. The Chicago Sun Times reviewed the album, saying ""ArtSpace" is a stunner, as lavish conceptually as it is musically; the album rewards close — and repeated — listening.” Stay Connected on Social Media! • The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture in the Wine and Lecture series as author Christian Esquevin gives an inside look at his latest book Designing Hollywood: How the Studio Wardrobe Department Created the Image of Golden Age Movie Stars. From the earliest days of their establishment in Hollywood, movie studios found that they needed to set up wardrobe departments and hire the best costume designers they could find. Women made up a large part of the audience – and they wanted to see the newest fashions on their favorite stars. Men could be attracted to the sexy outfits on the now stylish “Hollywood line” figure. The studios geared their advertisement to promote what the top stars would be wearing in forthcoming films. The lecture will focus on Esquevin’s new book and will include a slide show featuring the biggest stars of the Golden Age in costumes designed to create their image. If you have any questions please email info@coronadohistory.org or call (619) 435-7242.
