Come make a wish! A FREE, Family event. The ribbon cutting for the butterfly maze at Chollas Lake will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday March 22nd celebrating Spring Equinox. It will be a Sharing... meaning that you bring something to share. That could be food, beverage or you play music or plant a flower in the butterfly garden or something else… The name of this interactive installation is "The Wishing Machine." It is an extension of my body of work: Urban Succession. It is a maze made of raised planter boxes that are filled with butterfly flowers. The center of the maze is a wishing well. Around 300 students from Patrick Henry High researched the ecosystem of Chollas Lake and illustrated their studies onto the sides of the boxes. I hand made the bricks of the wishing well and painted the words wishing well in the 6 main languages of City Heights. (Under the roof is “The Secret Sky”) Many people and organizations have collaborated in the making of this project. Lumber Cycle donated the wood, Biology Through Art donated the paint, and City Farmers Nursery donated the soil. The Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival returns to San Diego June 18 to June 28, 2025. The annual summer festival is a highlight of the classical music calendar and the country’s largest gathering of concertmasters and principal players from the nation’s top orchestras. Under the baton of Maestro Michael Francis, who returns for his 11th year as music director and conductor, the 2025 festival features six, unique performances at two venues, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center and the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater. The festival, the largest Mozart celebration in North America, opens with a must-hear performance of Mozart’s newly discovered Serenade in C Major. Featuring musicians from top U.S. orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and more, Mainly Mozart’s All-Star Orchestra is the only orchestra of its kind in the country. At The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla, each concert will be preceded by new Mozart-themed pre-concert talks or mini-concerts at 6 p.m. in The JAI, which will be included in the base ticket price. Set sail for an evening of raucous adventure and rollicking laughter as Grossmont College Theatre Arts presents "The Pirates of Penzance!" This timeless comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan will sweep audiences off their feet with its infectious melodies, zany characters, and madcap wit. Directed and choreographed by Melissa Glasgow, with musical direction by Patrick Marion, "The Pirates of Penzance" will run March 20-27 at Grossmont College’s Performing & Visual Arts Center Stage. The production brings a fresh, dynamic energy to this beloved classic while honoring the rich tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s razor-sharp satire and high-spirited hijinks. "The Pirates of Penzance" follows the story of Frederic, a young man mistakenly apprenticed to a band of soft-hearted pirates. As he completes his term of service, he vows to dedicate himself to eradicating piracy—until a technicality binds him to the pirates indefinitely. This is a one-day intensive workshop focusing on painting flowers alla prima. Students will learn about composition by designing and setting up a floral still life. We will take a closer look at the structure of flowers and techniques for painting them. A fun, fast study, and an excellent opportunity to develop painting skills and study floral painting in depth. The workshop will conclude with group critique. For oil painters of all levels. Materials: 9” x 12” or 11” x 14” canvas or linen panel; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, size 2, 4, and 6. We will have a 20-minute warmup, and then the models will take one long pose. Proportion and sighting will be emphasized, and students will have individual attention from the instructor. You may bring any material (drawing or painting) that you would like to use—excluding oil paints. Butcher paper and charcoal will be provided. The instructor will also bring a variety of drawing materials to try and to play with. We will take a break in the middle, so bring your lunch. A variety of teas, snacks, and water will be provided by the instructor. All skill levels are welcome! Materials: Two or more large sheets of charcoal or pastel paper and one kneaded eraser. This week of Summer Camp is all about sculpting with a variety of fun traditional materials & mediums! Kids will explore sculpture through planning, designing and creating: masks with paper maché, wooden sculptures, tiny pottery with ceramic wheel throwing, clay handbuilding and more! It’s a fun week of hands-on learning focusing on three-dimensional design with creativity and skill-building with a variety of instructor-artists at the Craft Collective Studio!
