  • Class Description This Spring let’s celebrate the equinox in the unique beauty of San Diego Mission Trails Regional Park. A guide will lead us along an easy trail that will take us through a small oak woodland with majestic coast live oaks and along a stream where a replica of a Kumeyaay home is found. Thanks to this winter’s extensive rainfall, the trails will be alive with spring growth. All our senses will be awakened as birdsong and other sounds of nature accompany us and we breathe in fresh sage-scented air; if we’re lucky, we’ll spot some late-blooming wildflowers along the way. Following our brief walk, we’ll gather at picnic tables and write to prompts, inspired by nature. Bring your journals or notebooks. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes; a sun hat. Bring water. Snacks will be provided. Meeting location and additional details will be provided upon registration. The Spring Equinox Retreat is one in a series of Field Trips we writers will be taking in the coming months. Watch your email for more to come. Disclaimers Specific details about the meeting location will be confirmed with your reservation. Please be advised that it is best to register at least a week before the start of a class to help our instructors prepare and ensure that it does not get canceled or rescheduled. Policies regarding registration, refunds, cancellations, etc. can be found on our policies page. If you would like to provide feedback regarding this class, please feel free to complete an evaluation form.

  • From Bach Collegium San Diego: Our final Bach at Noon concert this season explores the baroque roots of the music of the "Father of the string quartet and symphony", Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809), mainly via works of composers he knew and admired. Gregor Werner (1693-1766) was Haydn's senior colleague at the musical establishment of the Esterhazy court, and despite significant conflict between the two men, late in life Haydn memorialized Werner with a string quartet version of Six Introductions and Fugues taken from Werner's oratorios. The centerpiece of this program is the suave and elegant Salve regina in F major of Nicola Porpora (1686-1768), who hired Haydn, then a struggling 20-something in Vienna, as a valet and accompanist. From Porpora, Haydn confided in his first biographer, he learned "the true fundamentals of composition". Social media: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter
  • J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion was written for the Good Friday Vespers service of 1727 at the St Thomas' Church, Leipzig, and brings together relevant themes of betrayal, judgement, death, and love as expressed through St. Matthew's Gospel and Bach's librettist Picander. Bach’s vivid musical account of Christ's passion combines a striking drama and devotion forming a pinnacle of the vocal works composed for the Leipzig churches. Stay Connected on Social Media! • From the gallery: Humans have positioned themselves as de facto rulers of the world, all while choosing to be completely removed from the natural world. This has led to devastating consequences as we have sought to reshape the planet for our comfort. Industrial societies have moved away from a harmonious coexistence with nature and can no long access the ancient, arcane knowledge through which our ancestors sustainably interacted with the earth. Climate Reckoning is an exploration of that lost connectivity with our fragile home and if we aren’t too late, how we might get the chance to salvage it. Participating artists include Amanda Saint Claire, Ann Olsen, Anna Stump, Bridget Rountree, Cindy Zimmerman, Helen Redman, Irene Abraham, Jane E Hindman, Jennifer Spencer, Judith Christensen, Judith Parenio, Kathleen McCord, Kathy Nida, Kim Niehans, Kirsten Aaboe, Linda Litteral, Lisa Hutton, Moya Devine, Nanette Newbry, Nilly Gill, Prudence Horne, Ruth Wallen, Stacie B Greene, Stephanie Bedwell, Susan Osborn, and Terri Hughes-Oelrich. Feminist Image Group (FIG) is a coalition of artists who meet to organize exhibitions, discuss art, see exhibitions, and support one another in their careers. FIG Artists promote an inclusive worldview that allows all voices. As friends, they aid each other in their creative and curatorial endeavors. Opening reception: 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21. • Music Director Rafael Payare leads the Orchestra in works by two of Venezuela’s most notable composers. Antonio Estévez’s best-known music is the 1954 Cantata Criolla, a lively work based on the Venezuelan mythic poem about a singing contest between Florentino and the Devil. And Evencio Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua is filled with the influences of the country’s folk melodies, popular dance rhythms and even medieval carols. Plus, French composer Paul Dukas’ La Péri, a dance poem based on a Persian folk story, is filled with grandiosity, mystery and introspection—and an ebullient fanfare closing. Note: gates for the Friday and Saturday performances will open at 6pm.
