  • Come learn to crochet a granny square at our March Craftivism Class! As a community class we will all create squares to add to our community Craftivism Quilt. You’ll have time to make at least a few granny squares. Once you get started you won’t want to stop! Crochet has typically been deemed a women’s craft, separating the work from the male dominated sphere of “Fine Art.” In recent history, feminist artists have affirmed crochet as fine art, and worthy of being an inclusive activity and a means to use your voice through craft. About Craftivism Classes: From yarn bombing to femmage, the Women's Museum's Craftivism Classes invites a local artist featured in the museum's current "Crafting Feminism" exhibit to teach participants a crafting skill and how they can use it in their activism. All classes are bilingual and taught in English and Spanish Non-WMC Members: $20 WMC Members: $10
  • At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14 we'll be meeting at Ski Beach for a visibility event at Hubbs-SeaWorld. SeaWorld is helping design a massive, industrial-scale finfish farm that is currently under review to come to the coast of San Diego. This practice of industrial fish farming is bad for a multitude of reasons: it pollutes our waters, creates toxic algae blooms, spreads sea lice, entangles marine mammals, and puts fishermen out of business. Despite an outcry of opposition from local fishermen and conservation groups, SeaWorld is continuing to support this development: we're telling them to stop their support and forget the fish farm! So, join us from 1-2 p.m. on the 14 for a series of speakers including fisherman John Law and San Diego Coastkeeper Executive Director Phillip Musegas. Free pizza will be provided! Meeting location: 3099 Ingraham St, San Diego, CA 92109. View this event on Facebook

  • We marvel in this information age how much human knowledge is readily accessible and how quickly we can communicate with each other which has greatly improved the quality of life. Yet we are also keenly aware of the dangers of misinformation and disinformation and how fast that false information can now travel. There is a mental dimension in the spiritual realms far more vast than any technology marvel on Earth. This dimension is called universal mind. Within universal mind is every thought humanity has ever had, is having now, and will ever have. These mass thoughts can be good, bad or indifferent. We are all swimming in the sea of universal mind, tapping into its collective ideas as we would sign onto the Internet. It is through universal mind that we can cooperate together in a common purpose propelling us to great good or to great evil. In this eye-opening workshop, discover how to tune out of the world’s mass hypnosis and into your own true self. Learn effective meditations with Divine Light to purify and steady your consciousness to be open to divine inspiration flowing from realms greater than universal mind, yet refuse to succumb to the bombardments of mass hypnotic thinking. • The ocean inspires, connects, sustains us. Artists, poets, musicians, surfers… beach-goers the world over share a deep admiration and respect for the sea. The "Poetry in Ocean: A Celebration of the Sunset, Surf and Sea" panel and open reading was born of the same gusto for sun and surf, San Diego style! The evening will start with a panel discussion led by surfer and associate publisher of the San Diego Poetry Annual, Michael Klam. Panelists are surf journalist, Scott Bass, classical pianist/surfer, Jeeyoon Kim, poet/visual artist, Ted Washington, and lifelong surfer, artist, author and contributing writer at The Surfer’s Journal, Cher Pendarvis. Open mic follows the panel. All poets and writers of any genre are invited to share their take on the influence and inspiration they draw from the sea. Open mic readers will share one poem (or two short ones) or one piece of short prose each. Writers can sign up on the night of the show or preregister to read at sdpoetryannual@gmail.com. The Friends of the San Diego Central Library will also be hosting a membership drive to support the library.
